Real Life Stories ARTIST TALK Cecilia Vicuña is a Chilean poet and artist based in New York and Santiago, Chile. She was born in 1948 and raised in La Florida, in the Maipo valley. Vicuña started painting from 1957 to 1964 large abstract paintings at her first studio, built by her father. In 1966, she attended architecture school at the University of Chile in Santiago but switched to the fine arts school. Her first published poem was in 1967, within a Mexican magazine called El Corno Emplumado. Vicuña's work is noted for themes of memory, language, extinction, and exile. Her work has been exhibited at museums and galleries.
