‘Dangers are greatly overestimated by cruising sailors and especially by yachting editors’ The latest annual crime report from the Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN) marks a rise in criminal activity in Caribbean waters, with a 17 per cent increase in both violent (assault, piracy, robbery) and nonviolent (burglary, theft, vandalism) crimes. A total of 90 incidents were reported across the region by sailors – a rise of 13, according to the volunteer organisation. The waters around Mylor are some of the country’s most scenic, inspiring sailors and sailing writers for generations, and Mylor Yacht Harbour makes an ideal base for exploring them. To the north, the Fal estuary meanders 10nm or so up towards Truro, the county town of Cornwall. Numerous navigable creeks and tributaries make exciting high-water anchorages for a lunch stop or, in some cases, a jaunt to the pub. Favourites include the Pandora Inn on nearby Restronguet Creek, which has moorings and a dinghy pontoon for visitors. Beware, though: its low beamed snugs, real ales and excellent local fish dishes make it a far-from-undiscovered treat. A good reason for using a little-known anchorage is to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty it usually provides, but also to have the chance to meet yachtsmen who avoid marinas, often with a story to tell. Cape St Vincent was once the end of the known world and a springboard for the great Portuguese voyages of discovery. It is wild and windswept, sometimes visible for miles out at sea but, even in summer, often heard before being sighted. Just 18nm further north is a bay at Arrifana surrounded by dramatic cliffs giving shelter from north and east. The past four years has seen a convergence of the technologies sold for cruising yachts and those aimed at the mainstream racing community. Navico group led the way with the original B&G Zeus multifunction display (MFD), which incorporated layline (the most efficient sailing track to a point on the course), wind graph and calculated tidal stream info that was previously only available on expensive very high-end systems or PC-based race software. All the other major electronics manufacturers quickly followed suit, while startline functions were also added in later versions. ALL CHANGE AT LBS The London Boat Show team has revealed seismic changes to the 2018 event. The once 10-day event has now been slashed to five, and organisers have decided to shake things up with new interactive entertainment and, rather intriguingly, themed catering. Next year will also see the addition of the Boating & Watersports Holiday Show, in an attempt to broaden the range of interest across the sporting and leisure world. The move follows disappointing turnout in both exhibitor and attendee numbers in recent years, and a pushback from exhibitors on the length of the show. As Murray Ellis, who manages the show said: “Having gathered and listened to feedback from visitors and exhibitors, we knew we needed to make some changes.” The show was pulling in numbers…

Just beware the isolated danger of Black Rock, well marked (Fl(2) 10s) in the middle. Once in Carrick Roads, the only hazards to be aware of are the extensive mudbanks that choke the Fal estuary north of Mylor Creek. The winding channel up to Truro is well marked, but boats turning west out of the deeper water towards Mylor should take care to stay within the marks. Pick up the port and starboard channel entrance markers half a mile east of Mylor harbour – lit with flashing lights at night (Fl.G. 4s and Fl.R. 5s). The rest of the channel marks are unlit.
