Local sailor Dan Gibbs has the following recommendations for sailors visiting Birdham Pool, based on his experience: “For a day sail, due to the lock and tide you’ll probably just be in Chichester Harbour for a few hours. If it’s an early morning/ early evening high water, then you can go out for the day, to maybe Portsmouth on the morn tide and back on the next tide. Weekends for us tend to be the Solent, the normal harbours of Bembridge, Cowes, Yarmouth on the Isle Wight and then Lymington, Beaulieu, Southampton and Portsmouth with all its marinas. If we’re going for a longer trip, it tends to be either along the coast to the west, ie Poole or Weymouth, or across the Channel to Cherbourg or the Channel Isles.…
