Our scooter club was mainly made up of Vespa owners; those who took the reliable route of scooter ownership. For two of us though, the only choice was a Lambretta. We had previously known nothing about Lambretta mechanics, and if I’m honest we still didn’t, but that was not going to stop us! There was no rule to say we couldn’t pull them apart, even if we didn’t have a clue how to put them back together again. First out of the gate with dedicated expansion chambers for the Quattrini kit are Chiselspeed Tuning. We asked Martin Cook about his initial thoughts on fitting the kit and the performance of his new expansion chambers. “Having fitted and dynoed the Quattrini M-210-TV, I have to say we’re very impressed. We’d seen some reports about the barrel overhanging the casing but this wasn’t an issue with the standard Italian Li125 case we used as a test bed. The only work required was a matching job to barrel and there was no need for any welding around the transfer ports. This year the British Scooter Championship was again supported by the main three sponsors: Casa Lambretta, Lambretta Club GB and Lambretta.it, and was held over nine rounds with 34 point-scoring races over the year. Sadly the Group 4 class which used to be the dominant class in terms of numbers has been less popular but was dominated in terms of race wins by Replay Racing’s Darren Conneely on ‘The Badger’. I was in Valencia about 18 months ago and I visited a classic car showroom there called Antequera Classic where I met the owner Javier and his father. To non-Italian language speakers, some of the most simple Italian words and phrases can sound rather exotic. Take Faro Basso, for example, it does have a slightly mystical, avant-guard sound. In reality, it translates as low light – although some internet Italian to English translation sites amusingly suggest Faro Basso means low lighthouse. Ever since the first Lambretta engine was tuned the emphasis has always been on trying to create as much power as possible. That’s fine but just because an engine has a large amount of power doesn’t mean to say its full potential is being used. There are many reasons for this being the case, from the cylinder area where the power is created, through the drive train, finally to the gearbox. To analyse exactly what’s going on, it’s worth looking in more detail at these three areas separately. Afew years ago Steve had all the trappings of success but that all changed following a routine visit to the doctor. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, he was admitted to hospital almost immediately and remained there for several months undergoing lifesaving treatment. It was an experience that changed his life in many ways. “I got my head around my cancer fairly quickly,” he explained “but I couldn’t understand why it was attacking children and seeing them suffer on the ward was heartbreaking.” Once discharged, Steve resolved to do what he could and rode with three friends on Lambrettas to Milan, raising over £13,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
