At least one major European company is engaged in talks. However, these appear to have stalled due to differing expectations of the parties involved. One of the biggest secrets in scootering’s summer calendar is Armando’s open day. Held in early May, it’s more of a weekend event and is Giulio and Guido’s way of saying thanks to their customers for supporting them over the previous 12 months. This year’s Saturday evening party was held at Sheffield’s Millennium Hall, with DJ’s playing to a packed audience. On Sunday the workshop was open for inspection, giving an opportunity to see both ongoing projects and the latest scooters to arrive from Italy. Hundreds of scooterists had made the trip and with scooters lining each side of the street, a party atmosphere filled the air. When you visit any seaside scooter rally it’s clear to see that the local pubs and clubs also offer up scooter-related attractions. In moderation, these attractions can add to the weekend, but if they are allowed to take priority over the weekend’s social activities, then I believe that their effect in the longer term could be more harmful to the organised scooter rally activities, and scooter rallies in general. Currently under development is an exciting project that will combine the handling qualities of a Lambretta with the performance of a Vespa small-frame. “The problem with the Lambretta engine case is that both bore and transfer port sizes are dictated by the stud spacing,” explained Marco. “In contrast, Vespa small-frame engines offer far more potential as their barrels bolt directly to the engine casing without studs. There’s no doubt that Quattrini’s M200 Vespa small-frame conversion is one of the most exciting out there, and I’ve designed an adaptor plate that allows it to be mated with a Lambretta small block casing. Coming off your scooter is not the nicest of things to happen, but from time to time it can happen. Even something simple like sliding off on diesel or grit in the road can do damage. Paint work may get scratched or a footboard dented, which are easy to notice. However, other damage can happen, which at first glance isn't so easy to spot or is hidden. These can have an impact at a later date, so even if you have had the slightest of accidents it is always best to fully inspect your scooter afterwards. All Innocenti Lambretta scooters manufactured between 1947 and mid-1958, up until the Series one was launched, were made with shaft drive engines. To some engineering experts and enthusiasts of a certain vintage, shaft drive engines hold a certain affection, starting off with the Model A in 1947, a basic, 3-speed foot gear change, 125cc shaft drive engined scooter, producing 4.1bhp that launched Lambretta. The follow-on machine was, of course, the Model B, which was in production from November 1948 for 14 months. Slightly heavier than its predecessor, the Model B also had a smidgen more power. Incredibly, it’s now 22 years since Pat Joynt made his unplanned arrival in Vitenam. Since then he’s established Saigon Scooter Centre as one of the major suppliers of re-made premises to celebrate in typical Vietnamese style. As the afternoon rolled on and the weather deteriorated, a steady flow of party goers arrived at the shop. Online giant Amazon has changed the way people buy, and is apparently destroying the big high street retailers. It’s easy to see why. Aspecialist retailer, like the now defunct Maplin Electronics, or Toys R Us, has to try and stock stores all around the country with thousands of products with all the associated costs of central warehousing, distribution, business rates, staffing, etc., whilst people are tempted to Amazon by an easy ordering system, fast delivery, wide choice and easy one click payment. Too much ‘custom rubbish’ I used to enjoy reading a monthly copy of Scootering. But now there’s too much custom rubbish printed. February and March time was always greeted with great anticipation as the dates for that year’s national scooter rallies would be announced. There was no great fanfare, just a case of getting hold of a copy of the latest edition of Scootermania to view the list. Someone would turn up with a copy on club night, with everyone surrounding the small A5 size publication to have a look. Though some venues would change, many stayed the same, perhaps just having different dates. This gorgeous old school cutdown first graced the pages of Scootering back in December 1990, when it was owned by Kevin Dearne. Although Hellbound’s irrevocably linked with his name, Kev wasn’t the project’s instigator. “I’d been out drinking in Burton, one thing led to another and what was intended to be a quiet drink turned into quite a session,” began Kev. “By the end of the night there were only two of us left standing and when the pubs closed we went back to his place, which is where I found Hellbound. Springtime sprung us an event at Bowler’s Manchester with six tribute bands and the feel-good party atmosphere that’s become the event’s trademark. Historically, it’s been billed a Ska event, and yes, in the past the majority have been Ska bands, though of late, the musical styles have become more mixed. This early event of the year is to give tribute bands the chance to shine. Andy Kleek started this show, which is about six months earlier than the main GNSKA event due to loads of bands asking to play at the biggie, and he had no chance of fitting them all in. After a rather long and lean spell, Eric Cope has returned back to the track to take his Lambretta into uncharted territory, by going faster than ever before on a full-bodied Lambretta. At Elvington airfield on May 12 he recorded a top speed of 112.321 mph over a half-mile distance, from a standing start. It was an interesting day. The weather forecast was showing easterly, which would have been a back wind (better for top speed records), but unfortunately competitors arrived at 8am to find thick fog and could not see the runway. Thankfully, by 9am the fog was clearing, but leaving a light wind across the runway, which got stronger during the day. Since building his 32+bhp liquid cooled, Quatrinni-powered custom streetracer ‘This Is The Life’, which was a feature scooter in Scootering (October 2017), Franky Fountain has been on the receiving end of a series of life's hard knocks… affecting both his personal health, as well as that of his parents. Franky suffered no less than three mini-strokes in under 12 months, and the following year both his mother and father sustained fatal strokes within a week of each other. This book is an easy and enjoyable read, summing up the gritty and organic evolution of the scooterboy, with Sticky’s usual humour firmly entrenched throughout. Using perfect tempo he (almost through gritted teeth) acknowledges the ‘mod pre-cursor’ era, before quite rightly parking it up in the space it deserves with this gem of a statement: ‘Mod is not scooter-dependant. You can be a perfectly viable mod on a bus, a train, or driving a classic car. For mods the scooter is an accessory. The 1960s was the decade where tuning and sporting events for scooters first came to light. Not only was it a groundbreaking time on the engineering side, but also for those wishing to break records. Outright speed attempts and quarter-mile times led the way and many of those attempting it realised it could enhance their business. Don Noys was the first to get noticed with his exploits on a modified TV 200. Soon after came Lambretta Concessionaires with the Atlanta Five project.
