Welcome to the Design issue! Design is of course always on our minds when we scrap, but sometimes it helps to shake things up a little too, and bring new design ideas and principles to the scrap table. Our galleries this issue were designed to challenge us to rethink the way we lay out a page and I was inspired when I saw how creative people were, even with the simple and stylish gallery, (page 49). But the design inspiration doesn’t end there… Fiona Paltridge knocked my socks off with her ‘oceans and islands’ principles in her Unleashing the Inner Artist piece (page 28). If you like needle and thread work, why not try adding stitching onto your layouts? It adds a wonderful handmade touch to your projects and a lovely homely feel. This month I explore ways to work with stitching and give you some tips and tricks to getting a great result. IDEA ONE: COMBINE HAND AND MACHINE STITCHING FOR A LOVELY TEXTURAL MIX. For my first layout Swim I have combined hand stitching with machine stitching. I find simple straight borders really finish off the paper layers nicely and when there is a large area to cover, it is much faster with a machine. Journal HEATHER MCMAHON Materials: Paper – Carta Bella; Embellishments – Dusty Attic paints, chipboard and stencils, Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magicals, Jillibeans Soup mini alphas, October Afternoon alpha stickers, Mod Podge. Technique: Coat a journal cover with Mod Podge or a similar sealer to protect your work when being handled. METHOD: 1. Tear a strip of the Carta Bella paper and adhere to the bottom third of the journal. Trim to fit. Using a selection of stencils and co-ordinating paints, randomly cover sections of the journal, including the part covered in paper, making sure to continue patterns across the spine in places. Add some Magicals to a few places and spray with water. 2. Stencil paint through a Dusty Attic butterfly stencil onto a piece of white cardstock. When dry, carefully…

Marbled patterns are so pretty especially when a whole rainbow of colours are used for a dramatic contrasted marble effect. There are lots of marbled pattern papers on the market available however it is often hard to find the right colour combination for your current paper craft project. This is where my faux marbling technique can really come in handy. You can recreate these amazing faux marbling patterns in your own home using Coloured Texture pastes from Colour Blast. Memories fade all too quickly. For me, forgetting things has been programmed into me after some hurtful events early in my life. It seems to be a part of my coping mechanism that has unfortunately passed through to some of my happy memories also. Regardless of how good your memory is, if you’re scrapbooking to leave a legacy for your children or beyond, then you owe it to them to actively incorporate journaling to capture your stories as you go, and before they’re forgotten. Quite simply, each layout should contain the basics: Who, What, Where and When.
