Creating an art journal or personal art diary helps you develop your knowledge, finetune your skills and conceptualise ideas within a portable journal. It’s a journal you can take anywhere to jot, doodle, paint and create anything your creative spirit desires in. Each art journal is completely unique to the owner – it would be impossible to find two the same – and serves as a wonderful reminder of creative flow through the years. The versatility of Copic markers is just amazing and I have had so much fun exploring them through various applications. They feature two different nibs, with a large brush tip at one end and a chisel tip at the other. The brush tip allows for a very thick to a very fine line, while the chisel tip achieves a medium width to an average thickness. Paintbrush fonts are very trendy in the scrapbooking world at the moment – just think of products from Heidi Swapp or Ali Edwards – and many scrappers have been having lots of fun incorporating these onto their scrapbook pages. How did you first get into art and papercraft? I started scrapbooking in 1995. That led to rubber stamping, which led to mixed-media and art journalling. I have kept a personal journal since I was nine years old, though, so art journalling was a natural fit. How would you describe your style? Messy, organic, colourful. What does a day in your life typically consist of? I tend to resist routine and schedules. Generally I work in the studio while my fellas are in school. For my article this month I want to delve into one of those aspects of scrapbooking that some of us seem to avoid – journalling. As the quote above says, without the words, the pictures are meaningless, and I can vouch for that firsthand! My Nan left one extremely old, leather-bound family photo album to my mum many years ago and she has promised that one day it will be passed on to me. I have never liked my handwriting and this is evident in my pages. I usually hide my journalling to cover the ‘scrawl’ as I call it, but recently I discovered the fabulous Silhouette pen holder, which has added another dimension to using my Silhouette machine!
