We all love to support a good cause. Whether it’s through financially helping a charity or event, scrapbooking for personal reasons or contributing to challenges. We don’t see many black backgrounds in scrapbooking, but I think we should! Let me explain why and give you some pointers on the most effective ways to use them. Black backgrounds can really make a page pop. Like white backgrounds, black ones provide a strong contrast for your foreground work – photos, papers and embellishments. The greater the contrast, the more eye-catching your work will be. So why do we use so many more white backgrounds than black ones? White backgrounds show up everything well – all sprays, paints, papers and embellishments contrast against them beautifully. Black, however, can be more challenging as not all products can be seen clearly against it. If you spray a dark blue spray onto a black background you won’t even see it. Therefore…

Do you have a photo for which you can’t find the right background paper to complement it? Perhaps you have a special photo and want to make it the focus? Why not go BIG and blow up your photo to become your background paper. It is such a simple and fast way to make a statement layout. You don’t need a professional camera to take a photo that can be enlarged to 12in x 12in when printed. Most mobile phones have the ability to take photos that are good enough to enlarge to a full 12in x 12in page. The photo that I am using for the background was taken in 2005, with a digital camera that would probably not compare to the quality of most mobile phone cameras today.…

Washi tape is a high-quality masking tape made from natural fibres such as bamboo, hemp, rice, wheat or from the bark of native Japanese trees. But more than that, washi tape is a material which is beautiful yet useful at the same time. You can tear it, stick it, reposition it and write on it. The low-tack adhesive makes it extremely easy to use and re-use. I think it’s so popular because of its versatility – and it looks great too! I often read that many women took up scrapbooking when their children were born, so they could document their first milestones and create a keepsake for them to cherish and look back on. However, there are many of us who began scrapbooking as a creative outlet and don’t have children to use as the subjects of our creations. Sometimes it can be difficult for us to come up with different things to document on our layouts. It’s important not to forget about yourself and recording the changes in your own interests. Don’t be discouraged about using photos of yourself on these layouts. Remember to create for yourself – your layout doesn’t always have to be uploaded to your blog or published in a magazine. 1 Cut two pieces of washi tape to the length you would like for your feather, then cut one piece of string so that it is slightly longer. The string will form the quill of the feather. 2 Lay one piece of washi tape over the string so that the string is roughly in the centre, with a little bit of string left hanging out at the bottom.
