LAST TIME I DEVOTED THIS Welcome to a superb scheme called ‘Rehoming Rods’ which is run by Jason Scott and aimed at providing tackle to young anglers. A great initiative, it’s one of many such attempts to generate interest in angling among future generations. I’m happy to report there are similar initiatives aimed at getting youngsters involved in angling. For instance, one of my regular correspondents, Alan Darby, who runs Gint’s Bait & Tackle at Millom in Cumbria, recently organised a fun day (pictured, top right) at the local pier. WHILE THE SHINGLE BEACH at Lee-on-the-Solent has much to offer the angler thanks to a wide variety of species throughout the year, on this occasion during June I was out in search of smoothhounds. This shingle beach near Gosport is popular with tourists throughout the summer, hence evening sessions are really recommended for most species with the exception of plaice that often show from March onwards. Being within the confines of the Solent makes the beach a fairly sheltered venue, which is only adversely affected by a strong southwest blow. Generally the last three hours of the flood and the first two hours of the ebb, when there will be a left to right tidal pull, are favoured especially for the bigger species. GETTING THERE Take the A12 for Clacton-on-Sea. St Osyth village is two miles southwest of Clacton. Follow signs for Hutley’s caravan park where there is a free car park adjacent to the Sailor Boy public house. The beach is on the other side of the seawall. IN THE SHADOW OF THE ADMIRALTY Pier and the White Cliffs of Dover, Shakespeare Beach has shelter from all but southerly winds. It offers deep water and strong tides and varied fish species. During the summer it gets very busy with anglers fishing for mackerel and its increased use follows the closure of the Admiralty Pier. Being a good venue for young anglers, many of those from Kent who went on to be England International anglers honed their skills here. GETTING THERE From the A63 at Hull, take the third exit at the roundabout for the A1033 (Hedon Road) towards Beverley. Staying on the A1033, pass five roundabouts, turning right on to the B1445 (Market Place) and Main Road. Turn right, still the B1445 (Dimlington Road), and keep left for Seaside Road. The last junction before your destination is Vicars Lane. If you reach Firthholme Road you have gone too far. There is parking for a few cars off both sides of the Seaside Road. WHEN I FIRST MET MY mate Roger Cooling he had a Merry Fisher and we used to fish the shallow water marshland in The Wash, then he swapped it for a 38-footer, which is now moored at Grimsby. However, the call of the marshes soon had him investing in a small, open boat, similar to those you find on trout-fishing reservoirs, solely for the purpose of getting us back out on the marsh again. AUGUST 2011 ■ The Angling Trust was explaining how it felt the new Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authorities and the DEFRA-funded Sea Angling 2012 project could help shape the face of sea angling. I HAVE ABANDONED SOCIAL MEDIA because digital marketing gives me the creeps. I don’t like the idea of an artificially intelligent stalker that works out where I live, sifts through my posts, my searches and rare online purchases, then decides what I’m likely to buy next. A lot of my screen time is spent (wasted?) looking for information and tall tales about bass. CRICCIETH ON THE LLYN PENINSULA is dominated by the impressive castle, built from 1230 onwards. It is a tourist town, packed in summer, but offering more solitary fishing throughout the winter. The beach on the east side of the castle offers a mix of fishing throughout the year with some varied ground to choose from. SEASONAL SPECIES Bigger bass appear in early April and through to December. Long casts can find a few tub gurnards. From March to late June and again from late September to November, you can catch the occasional thornback ray at range from the shingle-backed storm beach about 400 yards east of the promenade. SOME TIME AGO, I WAS BASS FISHING and had caught a decent number of bass. Unusual for me, so I was quite happy. I got the timing and weather just right and my lures in the right place. Happy days. Q There are many styles of clip for attaching lures to the mainline or leader, which would you recommend that are both strong an allow lures to be changed quickly? WILL COOPER, FALMOUTH, CORNWALL DS says: Lure clips are a great way of changing baits quickly, but when it comes to fishing really small lures I prefer the more streamlined outline of a knot rather than a clip which, in my opinion, affects the lure’s action. THIRTY-ONE YEARS AGO, AFTER SOME 15 years of famine, anglers said goodbye to stripping out level-winds and fitting a solid frame crossbar. It was all thanks to the launch in 1990 of the Abu 6500CT and Daiwa Millionaire 7HT. UK beach anglers could open the box, load line and go fishing. Shimano’s Triton Speedmaster TSM 2CFS might have been a third option had it been designed a little differently. Abu made a few 6500CT casting reels around 1974-76 and it has never been clear why a game-changing reel like this didn’t get the big rollout it deserved. Whatever the reason, factory CTs were like gold dust, forcing anglers and tackle dealers to convert standard 6500C level-wind reels. Both versions of the little multiplier performed well but suffered from whippy spindles…

IS SUMMER, THE WATER temperature is into double figures and m like a kid in a sweet shop. I am spoiled for choice with species and techniques because the warmer water attracts the fish into shallower, weedy inshore areas to feed on the glut of prey . Areas on my patch in Scotland that were quite barren in the early spring are now filled with life, the kelp beds are thick and harbouring rock-dwelling species like wrasse, pollack and scorpion fish. From here on, my fishing revolves around targeting wrasse with soft lures and fishing metals for the larger species such as cod, pollack and bass. On the east coast of Scotland wrasse seem to disappear over the winter but the warm sea temperature always signals their return and it…

THESE BEACHES ARE BOTH CLASSED as fairly shallow and are renowned for their summer fishing, particularly for bass, with stingrays caught at St Osyth. At Jaywick, there are long rock breakwaters which have become havens for bass, where fish of more than 10lb have been caught in recent years. The St Osyth beaches, which are noted for stingrays and some big bass, begin with short breakwaters that stretch no more than 30 yards out to sea. To the south, this opens up into a long shallow beach stretching to the Colne Point Nature Reserve. SEASONAL SPECIES Bass are mainly caught here in summer and autumn, but you can expect thornback rays throughout the year, and soles from May to October. ABERTHAW IS ONE OF THE MOST productive shore angling venues in South Wales. The huge power station is the dominant feature at Aberthaw but this facility has now been decommissioned. Except for a few patches of sand and mud providing isolated patches of snag-free ground, this is an extremely rough ground venue. A wide variety of species is available from this beach, especially the increasingly popular smoothhounds. Certainly Aberthaw is one of if not the most consistent marks to catch them from the shore anywhere in the UK. SEASONAL SPECIES The first hounds of the season appear in May, sometimes earlier and, depending on the weather, you can expect to catch them here in good numbers right through until September. ONE OF THE BETTER-NOWN FISHING marks on the Holderness Coast, Easington is a great choice on small tides – anything under 5.5 metres on the Bridlington tide scale. It can be fished on bigger tides, but you’ll find the flow can be quite extreme. This venue can be snaggy due to the clays that are just beyond the low water mark, so avoid fishing the bigger tides. Remember, the bigger the tide, the stronger the tidal pull, and the more movement on your rig which often results in tackle losses. Good areas to fish are adjacent to the old steps, the bunker and end of the caravan site. IN THE LATTER PART OF THE LAST century, the once common spurdog was sorely depleted by commercial fishing, but gradually the pressure eased and it has taken nearly two decades for the species to show any real increase in its numbers and once again become a viable target for anglers in Britain and Ireland. Without commercial pressure the spurs are able to grow more towards their natural ceiling size of around 25lb. With so many anglers keeping their own specimen list, there is no better time to boat that big spurdog or even catch your first to get the ball rolling. WHATEVER THE SIZE AND type of your boat there are regulations determining the type and specification of lights you must install, and precisely where these must be fitted. These regulations also determine the light intensity of each navigation light, which equates to their minimum range of visibility. Other than by detection from radar, having correctly fitted navigation lights is the only way that other vessels can see you, determine what type and size of vessel you are, what you are doing and, most importantly, the direction in which you are travelling. The pulley is probably one of the most widely used rigs around our shores, being particularly good when fishing over mixed-to-rough ground because as you reel in a hooked fish the sinker lifts high in the water avoiding many of the gear-grabbing snags. Use this rig with either one hook or with two in a Pennell to catch cod, rays and smoothhounds. The hook(s) clip down on a Genie rig clip or similar device, such as a Breakaway Impact Lead or Imp, which provides a streamlined bait and is particularly useful for casting bulkier baits further out.
