Paris Green, who is ten years old, started sewing at age four. She used yarn, a piece of cardboard with holes in it and a plastic knitting needle. Paris is the brilliant mind behind her business Scarves and More, which is dedicated to designing dresses for the nonprofit organization Dress a Girl Around the World, whose mission is to remind girls of their worth one dress at a time. She also sews scarves and masks for homeless men and women on the streets in her hometown of Dallas, Texas, and she has sewn blankets for babies in newborn intensive-care units. Craig Conover started sewing in his eighth-grade home-economics class, learning to sew by hand and graduating to tote bags and pillows on a simple machine. After a 12-year hiatus, Craig purchased a 2-in-1 embroidery/sewing machine with the goal of making clothes. Learn essential tips and tricks to easily work with faux fur. • The nap indicates the direction of the fur fibers. Always cut and sew with the nap going in the same direction. • Cut faux fur in a single layer using scissors to cut through the knit backing only in small, short cuts. Carefully pull the fur fibers apart after cutting. • Use long pins or fabric clips to secure pattern pieces together, moving the fur fibers away from the raw edges. • Select a 3 mm stitch length. WRAPPED WREATH Upcycle plaid scarves into a sophisticated wreath featuring bold artificial flowers. SUPPLIES • Two matching or coordinating ready-made fleece scarves (about 8" × 60")• Artificial flowers• Foam wreath• Hot glue gun and glue sticks CONSTRUCT Cut each scarf in half lengthwise to create four rectangles. Set aside one rectangle. If needed, remove any tassels or fringe from the scarves. Hot glue one of the remaining three fabric-rectangle short ends to the foam wreath. Begin wrapping the fabric rectangle around the wreath, overlapping the fabric halfway, pulling tight and allowing wrinkles (1). Jumpsuits, created in the early 1900s, were originally utilitarian garments worn by parachuters and pilots (among others). Boilersuits, a looser, less-fitted version, were first worn by men who maintained coal burners (or boilers). During World War II, women donned them while working in factories. A wool jersey one-piece by Guy Laroche was the first jumpsuit to appear in the pages of Vogue in 1964. Jumpsuits continue to be popular today, showing up in many incarnations, from dressy to casual and everything in between.
