A knit neckband pattern piece should always be Shorter than the circumference of the neckline and then stretched out during sewing. But how much shorter the piece should be depends on the fabric. Since most sewing patterns come with only a single pattern option, you might need to adjust the length to better suit the knit fabric used for the neckband. Use the following recommendations as a starting point for how long the neckband should be. The percentages are in relation to the length of the neck opening, without seam allowances. SUPPLIES • ½ yard of 60″-wide ripstop nylon fabric • 1 yard of velvet fabric • Two 13” × 60” rectangles of high-loft batting • Matching nylon or polyester thread • Size 70/10 universal needle • Binding clips or magnetic sewing pins • Walking or roller foot • Removable fabric marker or draping tape PREPARE From each the ripstop and velvet fabric, cut one 13” × 60” rectangle. I grew up watching my grandmothers and my mother sew everything they ever wore, as well as many other things, including clothes for my dolls. Their influence on me was very strong, and sewing and design have always been a part of my life. Because of this, I was fascinated with fabrics and Barbie dolls from a very young age, whichpaved the path for me to explore higher education in fashion design. GAPING NECKBAND The neckband is too Long for the neckline. Shorten the neckband length using the suggestions below, and be prepared to adjust the length even more depending on the project. The neckband is too wide. Sometimes the neckband gapes because the neckband is too wide to lie flat on the body. Since the body gets more narrow close to the neck, a wide neckband might not stay flat. Reducing the width will usually fix this issue. The neckline Was stretched out during serging. Be careful to stretch only the neckband and never the neckline. Quick fix: Steam the area to shrink it back. That said, it is very satisfying to stitch up a comfortable coat that keeps you warm and stylish for many seasons. Take time to consider options, and sketch ideas as you plan the project. 1. Choose patterns specifically designed as outerwear. Look for pattern descriptions such as “semi-fitted,” “loose,” or “very loose fitting.” For independent patterns, “roomy,” “very easy,” or “boxy fit” can also suggest a fit appropriate to a coat. There should be 6-10” of additional ease over the body measurements for a comfortable coat. 2. Try on coats to assess the style and preferred fit. Sew News: Why was this book important to create? Bianca: This book was important for me to create because it fills a void in the hand-embroidery creative space. I enjoy hand embroidery, and, over the years, I have purchased many books to practice the craft. With those designs, I found myself tweaking them to better represent my hair texture, body, and skin. The designs in those books were not representative of my features and experiences, and I had to modify the White-centered designs to look like me. I had to learn techniques and source materials and fibers to reflect what I wanted to replicate. In doing so for my own personal creative expression, I knew others couid benefit from that knowledge.
