Follow these helpful tips to stitch beautiful bindings every time. • Use a walking foot to apply binding, especially on a quilt (A). The foot feeds all of the layers together so that the binding is evenly stitched and not stretched. • Use a guide on the presser foot and adjust the needle position to ensure consistent seam allowances. • Use double-sided adhesive tape to hold the binding around the edge for stitching. Place the tape on the back seam allowance, and then remove the protective paper. Wrap the binding around the edge and press firmly onto the tape. SUPPLIES • 1½ yards prewashed canvas fabric • One yard of 1½" wide cotton webbing • ¾ yard of 1" wide cotton webbing • Assorted large fruit and vegetable stamps • Fabric paint • Paint tray • Sponge paintbrush • Push pins • Acrylic quilting ruler • Fabric marker PREPARE Cut four 16" x 20" rectangles and one 15" x 20" rectangle from canvas. Cut both cotton webbing pieces in half. These pieces are now the wide and narrow straps. Position the cardboard on a flat work surface. Secure one exterior bag piece to the cardboard with push pins. Using a ruler and fabric marker, measure and mark evenly spaced grid lines on the fabric. Mark alternating intersections as print placement indicators (1). CONSTRUCT Stack the material in the following order: terry cloth, mesh, fabric with right side down, and batting. Pin the layers together, leaving a 4" opening along one side for turning. Stitch through the layers around the outside edge, leaving the 4" opening unsewn (1). Trim the corners and turn the sponge right side out. The order of layers will now be mesh, fabric, batting, and terry cloth. Topstitch ¼" around the outside edge of the sponge. SUPPLIES • 200 ft of ¼" cotton rope • 2" x 3" scrap of fabric CONSTRUCT Use a zigzag stitch of 4.5 mm width and 2 mm length to construct the bag. Wind one end of the rope into a tight coil until reaching 1¼" diameter. Pin to hold in place. Stitch an X across the full diameter of the circle, making sure to backstitch at both ends (1).
