A new strategy launched by the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust (GWT) aims to provide practical support to keepers struggling with depression. Raising the Game has been set up to address the issue of mental heath within the countryside. Jamie’s Helpline, a confidential telephone service, will be provided, along with training and monitoring. Gamekeepers will also be taught about how to deal with difficult situations by former Royal Marines through the Stag Training Initiative, which has been set up in partnership with the GWT.…

What I want from a day’s shooting has changed over the years. Whilst we still need our quarry to be challenging, good company is my priority. We would be shooting at Coleby Hall, owned by the Scarr family, in Upper Wensleydale on a clear, frosty day in December. “A bullet the size of a pea was the smallest that could be loaded satisfactorily and yet still give good accuracy.” In the late 19th century one of the most common types of firearm made was the rook rifle, built in all qualities from cheap Belgian examples to the very best London rifles. By far the majority were single shot and single barrelled but occasionally double-barrelled rifles were constructed for that extra shot. Double-barrelled rook rifles are hugely sought after by collectors on account of their rarity and style. Most of them were hammer rifles but for a short time in the late 1880s and 1890s hammerless double rook rifles were built on boxlock actions. One of the problems associated with the small-bore blackpowder rifles was their tendency to foul up with a consequent effect upon accuracy. The nature of rook and rabbit rifle shooting meant that many shots might be fired and this was frustrating. Henry Holland conducted many trials in the early 1870s and by around 1875 was advertising “freedom from escape and fouling, facility of loading”. His experiments eventually produced around 1880 what he termed “semi-smooth bore rifling”. Instead of using normal rifling, the barrel was scratch rifled. Such fine rifling did not clog up with lead and blackpowder residue yet still managed to grip the bullet sufficiently to spin it. On April 5, 1882, “Semi-Smooth Bore Rifling” became a registered trademark of Holland & Holland, barrels being engraved after this date…

Reinvigorating or creating a sporting estate from scratch requires thought, planning and time. While topography and location play huge roles in defining what is possible, the quality of the end product is very much in the hands of the owners. A business-like approach that sets a strategy for the project and takes into account environmental and financial considerations will yield the best results. Often there will not be anything wrong with an estate’s sporting credentials, but every individual will have ideas about what they want to achieve. Club: Kennel Club Event: Gundog working tests Venue: Chatsworth House Sponsor: Skinner’s The Kennel Club working tests were held by the gracious permission of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The two-day event saw gundogs tested on their natural working abilities under the relevant sub-group: spaniels, HPRs or retrievers. Each subgroup is tested on a variety of different skills. HPRs are required to demonstrate they are able to hunt with style and purpose and retrieve with efficiency. Retrievers are required to mark the fall of a dummy and retrieve quickly to hand with pace and drive, and spaniels are required to hunt with style, pace and courage, and retrieve quickly and cleanly to hand. An open and novice spaniel test in honour of Richard Preest will be held at Brandhouse Farm, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, by kind permission of the Regis family and gamekeeper Andy Fisher on September 16, writes Maurice Stanbury. All funds raised will be for Richard and a charity of Richard’s choice. As many in the spaniel world are aware, Richard, who won the Cocker Championship in 2016, suffered a spinal stroke a short time ago and has been severely incapacitated. There will also be an auction of donated opportunities from spaniel trainers and breeders, gamekeepers and others who know Richard well and wish to make a contribution. Donations already include training days, a day’s driven shooting for two, shooting lessons and a four-night break for four people in Cornwall, among others.…

I have been a fan of paper cases since using paper Ely Impax 50 years ago and achieving some memorable shots when I was a mere boy, self-taught and had access to only a few acres of rough shooting. Back in June, I was on top of Longridge Fell to meet some pals at a local hostelry, when I saw a large plume of brown smoke on the southern horizon. I took this to be from the burning Saddleworth Moors but it turned out to be from the Winter Hill fire. The results of these uncontrolled fires are catastrophic to all the wildlife in the affected areas, both for the present and for the foreseeable future. This is the direct opposite to the desires of the conservationists, who wish to see the end of grouse shooting and its associated muirburns. TRAVEL The shoot sits roughly three miles to the north west of Helmsley at the bottom of the North York Moors National Park. The nearby A170 is a route well trodden by game shooting parties and the estates either side of this picturesque route are some of the county’s best. Birds started to decoy and Henry hit the ground running with the first 10 birds dead without a miss.We ended with 151 in the bag. The annual Scottish adventure with my son, Henry, started when he was 12. He is now 41, so we’ve had nearly 30 years of fun in the Highlands with its wonderful landscape, people and sport. The vast majority of rook rifles were single-barrelled as double rifles were expensive to manufacture and required care in regulating to get the correct convergence. But many sportsmen found it frustrating having just a single shot when another quick shot would be advantageous in the field. Consequently, double rook and rabbit rifles were made and they tended to be of good quality. Such rifles were expensive and today are highly collectible due to their diminutive size and obsolete status. Most double rook rifles were conventional sidelock hammer rifles. Snipe are returning as the seasons change and I cannot forget the joy of their arrival last year. I walked out beneath the full moon of September with lamp and rifle. A gentle frost was forming and the conditions were almost hopeless for finding a fox, but nights like these are too good to waste beside the fire. At the time of writing, Porsche has been unveiling the new Macan, the smaller sister car to the Cayenne on test. It features a more powerful petrol engine, tweaked suspension and much more sophisticated connectivity, all controlled by a gorgeous 11” screen in the middle of the dash. In July I spent three days on the Yorkshire Moors with local gamekeepers. We were taking part in a BASC initiative called “Let’s Learn Moor”. Around 600 children took part from both rural and urban schools in the local area. The aim was to show how keepers form the heart of rural communities, working alongside farmers and organisations such as the police and fire brigade. As you can imagine, fire was very much at the forefront as Saddleworth Moor was still burning and there was an interesting conversation between the keepers and the firemen about how effective leaf blowers are for blowing the fire back into itself – you could practically see the light bulbs popping above the firefighters’ heads. The Countryside Alliance has criticised BBC Radio 4’s Today programme for its broadcast from the Game Fair on July 28. A ban on grouse shooting was debated during the programme, this despite the broadcast coming from the Ragley Hall fair in an attempt to, as the Countryside Alliance put it, “redress the persistent bias we see directed at the countryside”. Tim Bonner, chief executive of the Alliance, said: “There were so many interesting discussions being had at the Game Fair, yet once again the BBC defaulted to its same old failings, serving its predominantly metropolitan audience by reducing a rural issue to its most simplistic level. As a relative newcomer to shooting (less than 10 years) but a lifelong rock climber and mountaineer, I was delighted to read the article about one of our great climbing icons in the July issue. Jerry Moffatt was truly ahead of his time and an inspiration to many. I gather that he was able to apply his climbing training principles to become a successful businessman. He opened one of the first dedicated indoor climbing and fitness/leisure centres in the UK, amongst other endeavours. To find out that he was also a lifelong countryman and shooter was welcome news. QI’d like to introduce my son to game shooting via clays on land I decoy pigeons over. I’d like to use the old thrower I learnt with. What precautions should I take when setting up and should we have a third person there either to coach my son or operate the trap? We have the farmer’s permission to shoot but he’d be absent on the days in question. A You don’t say how old your son is – if he is under the age of 15 he will need adult supervision when he is using the shotgun. When the breech-loading rook rifle made its appearance in the 1860s, a bewildering array of small calibres appeared. They were all loaded with blackpowder and most rifles have the calibre engraved upon them to avoid confusion. See the table (right) for the calibres that were available. The most common three calibres tended to be .297/250, a bottle-necked cartridge that could be reloaded developed by Holland & Holland, and the straight .300 and the straight .360 (No.5). Widely differing mechanisms for rook and rabbit rifles were used, including the Martini action, the side lever, the top lever and several different designs of hammerless action. “So, when was your first day of the season then, Mart?” It’s a question I’m asked a lot around this time of year, many people assuming, sadly wrongfully, that I have been living in a grouse butt for the past few weeks and am now starting to think about how I’m going to juggle grouse with an impending avalanche of partridge days here, there and everywhere, with the added complication of pheasants in October on the horizon. Given I’m just under 6ft and my 12 bore of choice is closer to 9Ib rather than under 7Ib I do not exactly fit the target market for the Liberty Light. However, putting that to one side, I needed to see how it shot before testing with some guinea pigs. I have to say it was great to shoot even though the stock measurements understandably were short. The gun is suitable for game and clays so I tested it on the 40ft and 80ft towers and then on to some battues, loopers, rabbits and grouse. QI struggle to judge lead when shooting traditional driven partridge coming overhead. What am I doing wrong? A This is a type of shooting I love and was practically reared on. Traditional partridges are often driven over hedges or small banks of trees. Some shoots may have a small slope to aid their height but on the whole they tend not to be the highest birds in the world. This does not mean that they are any less challenging and I often come across experienced high-bird shots who cannot kill these birds. There are two common mistakes: 1. QI have bought a working gundog puppy. Does that mean it will make a good dog for taking on a shoot? A Sadly, that is no guarantee at all. What you have bought is not technically a “working gundog” but a puppy from dogs that presumably work or have some competition success and not a show breeding line. You therefore have some chance that the dog will have characteristics that will make it a good companion in the field. But as mentioned, that is no guarantee and possibly, as the competition-winning dogs are a small gene pool, may not be to your advantage. All dogs are different. Some excel at certain things and some don’t and you will not know the exact characteristics or abilities until you start some training…
