MOST RIFLE AFICIONADOS KNOW THE STORY OF the so-called demise of the original Winchester Model 70. (I’ve mentioned it in this column several times.) In the early 1960s, skilled craftsmen trained before and during the world wars were retiring out of the gunmaker’s realm. Remington’s then-new Model 700 was threatening sales. Production cost of the original Mauser-based Model 70 loomed nearly as high as value, reducing profit margins to an unsustainable level. The “Rifleman’s Rifle” was in peril. Winchester hired a top executive from Ford to turn the company around. Complex actions were redesigned. Machined parts were replaced with stamped parts wherever possible. Hand-fitting was abandoned. WHEN ENGINEERING ITS NEW COVERT Double Stack (CDS9) 9mm semiautomatic pistol, Kimber started with the company’s popular single-stack Micro 9, and when they were finished, all that was left was some springs and a few screws. IN READING JACK O’CONNOR ARTICLES during my youth, I realized that some cartridges loaded in the U.S. were well under pressure or velocity specs of the identical cartridges loaded elsewhere, especially Europe. Later I learned some are loaded far under their SAAMI maximum average pressure (MAP) assignments. Let’s look at some examples. 7mm Mauser (SAAMI MAP: 46,000 CUP crusher; 51,000 psi transducer) Differences in sensor type and placement make a direct correlation of SAAMI to European (CIP) pressure standards difficult, but we can roughly approximate Euro standards for 7mm Mauser (7x57mm) as equivalent to our 58,000 psi. WHEN I WAS 13, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO MOVE to the country. I went to work on a farm that year, and by the age of 16 I was a hardened groundhog hunter. My rifle was a single-shot, bolt-action Cooey .22 my father bought in the 1930s.
