Are you naturally drawn to certain colours? It could be that you prefer either warm or cool colours. Warm colours are associated with the sun, fire, energy and action – they generally run from red-violet on the colour wheel through red to yellow-green (plus brown). Cool colours are associated with water, calm and relaxation – they flow from blue-green through blue into violet (plus grey). Green can vary in tone from cool bottle green to warm grass green, and many people consider green to be neutral. A winter blanket might feel cosier in warm colours, while a summer wrap might feel fresher in cool colours. When former nursery school teacher Louise Diggins lost her sister-in-law Vicky to breast cancer in 2014, she joined forces with her siblings, Paul (Vicky’s husband) and Nicola, to keep online wool shop The Knitting Shed open. The site only stocked commercial yarns at the time, but Louise was keen to sell hand-dyed skeins. “I liked the look of hand-dyed yarns but was unable to afford to stock any,” explains Louise. “I bought a couple of packs of undyed yarn and started in the kitchen… I still use a set of kitchen measuring spoons to measure the dye.
