QI see the word ‘ply’ used a lot in yarn descriptions and reviews, but I’m not exactly sure what it means. Please can you explain? Jane Sparing, Bath A‘Ply’ simply means a strand. If you untwist the end of your yarn, you’ll be able to count how many strands make it up. So, if there are two stands then that’s 2ply yarn. However, the number of strands/plies doesn’t determine the weight of a yarn, so a 4ply weight yarn might not have four plies! Sometimes it’s easy to see the number of strands because it’s used as a design feature – in Wendy Roam Fusion (reviewed on page 78), for example, they’re different colours.…

Swiss darning or duplicate stitch is a great way to add small details to your knitting, covering the stitch with an embroidery stitch the same shape as the stitch beneath it. Work from bottom to top, bringing the needle out at the base of the stitch at 1. Take the needle behind the top of the ‘V’, in at 2 and out at 3. Favourite knitting technique? Mosaic slip stitch colourwork. Knitting in mosaic is really easy. Designing the mosaic patterns is rather more difficult, but great fun! Describe your design style.
