Happy birthday to us! We’re celebrating our 150th issue, and we’ve really gone to town packing this issue chock-full of fabulous projects for you! It’s hard to believe some of us have been with the magazine since it started, back in 2005. It certainly doesn’t feel like it’s been 11 years! But this has made us think of all the gorgeous patterns we’ve published over the years, and so we put together a very special booklet featuring some of the team’s favourite designs – and ones we know you loved, too. Q Do you have any tips for avoiding wrist pain when knitting? Samantha Smith, Cardiff A There are a few things you can do to help prevent problems with your wrists, but perhaps the most important one is to make sure you give them a break from knitting now and then! Try to take frequent short rests, and think about changing your posture and knitting techniques regularly too – switching between the English and Continental methods can help, as can changing the way you hold your needles. SCHOOL DAYS, P49 MAKE A CROCHET CHAIN 1 Hold the hook in your right hand, and both the yarn end and the working yarn in your left hand. Crafter Karen Templer wanted to learn to knit long before she got around to it. Favourite knitting technique? I love knitting in the round for two reasons: firstly I’m quite an uneven knitter, and it means I can just knit, and not worry about the tension on my purl and knit rows being different, and secondly because non-knitters are always amazed by how you can use so many needles at once! English or continental? English, because that’s how I learned to knit and it works for me. However, I’ve just tried Portuguese knitting, which is fun, and I want to learn ‘backwards’ knitting. I’m a regular subscriber to Simply Knitting and in issue 147 I received a booklet called Commit to Knit. I love knitting but have no grandchildren just yet to knit for and my children are too old (and too cool) to wear home knitted garments. Since sportswear manufacturers invented it in the 1930s, the twin set has been synonymous with casual elegance. Back in the 1950s the combination of sleeveless top and co-ordinating cardigan was worn by the likes of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, and nowadays Michelle Obama gives it her seal of chic approval.
