As hand-knitting enthusiasts, we’re passionate about keeping this skill alive by passing it on to younger generations, aren’t we? So, it’s great news to know that there are groups who encourage young people to hand-knit. ShetlandPeerieMakkers, based in the Shetland Islands, is just one of these very special initiatives. “The project teaches primary-school-aged children the skills and knowledge of Shetland hand-knitting,” says Tracey Hawkins, Consultant Co-ordinator. “They get together in small groups, following the Shetland tradition of sharing skills across generations in a supportive environment. “Knowledge of Shetland hand-knitting techniques encourages individual creativity and an understanding of colourwork and working in 3D,” Tracey continues. Home life It revolves around my husband Mr Gorgeous, our son, and close friends. I sing in two choirs and like baking (I’ve recently got the hang of making sourdough bread). I love the garden and grow my own dye plants, fruit and veg. Daily knitting routine I usually take a break from working at lunchtime. Dunston is a rural village that lies about eight miles south of the historic city of Lincoln and has a population of around 600. Fifteen of those belong to the Dunston Knit and Natter group, who meet at the local church hall once a month. “It’s run by me with invaluable help from fellow knitter Pauline Moore,” says Beth Mcbuckie, the organisational star behind the group.
