Wow! Where did 2019 go?! It wasn’t that long ago I was planning last year’s summer holiday and now we’re looking at 2020 stretching out in front of us – a lovely fresh new year! I find the New Year celebration the best time to look back at what I’ve achieved and forward to what else there is to come. IT’S A BULLSEYE! I was recently asked to make Bullseye the horse from Toy Story as a present for a little girl. I decided to look at Alan Dart’s Muffin The Mule pattern that I had kept from issue 10 of Simply Knitting magazine back in 2005. This project took about two weeks to knit in between other projects, and I adapted the original pattern to look like Bullseye. The head and body of Alan Dart’s pattern for Muffin The Mule were almost the same. I used the same hooves, changed the rest of the leg and used an acrylic yarn so that the toy will be hard wearing. In my never-ending quest for happy mental health I have found an unexpected source of crafting comfort – social media. These days people with mental health issues are told to stay away from social media and in many ways I agree with that, but I’ve recently learned that it’s how I use social media that is the important thing. I am an avid Instagram user, not so much in posting things, but in following other crafters and related hashtags, like #knitstagram and #memadeeveryday. I find so much comfort and inspiration in connecting with other avid knitters. ROUND AND ROUND Q Everyone in my knitting group knits in the round, but I can’t get into it. What are the real benefits? There is no turning your work, and no purling if you are working in stocking stitch – you simply knit every round, giving you a rhythm that also helps you work faster. Because of this, you should not experience ‘rowing out’ (unevenness caused by alternating knit and purl rows). This month we were delighted to chat with Elizabeth Alcock who co-ordinates two North London knitting groups – HGS U3A and Finchley WI. Both dedicated groups knit in response to appeals from local and national sources. At present the group currently donates to Devon County Show, UK Handknitting Association, Age UK, Innocent and the Royal Free Hospital. The variety of charities they support provides members with a wide selection of charity projects to chose from and accomodates knitters of all levels.
