This issue we’ve been concentrating on the intricacies of detail and how adding a lot, or a little, can make a knitting design shine. There are so many ways we can add interest to our knits – the thick cord on a winding cable cardigan; the bright rainbow of colours in a dense Fair Isle scarf or the surprise addition of travelling vine stitch to a sleeve or back panel (all three of which you can find in this issue). It’s taken me a while to realise that taking your time to make your details as perfect as possible will reap rewards when it comes to getting ultimate knitting satisfaction. Many of us are part of a knitting community, where we get together with fellow makers to bond over and share our favourite hobby – whether it’s local or online, there’s something very special about the shared experience. But taking it to a whole other level is The Knitting Orchestra in Stroud, a group of keen knitters who are combining their passion for knitting with performance art. The Knitting Orchestra is a conceptual performance art piece embracing and revealing the poetics of knitting. It can involve anything from five to fifteen knitters, sitting in a group, conducted by artist Uta Baldauf, a Theatre and Visual Arts graduate. There are times in our lives when the deepest understanding and love is required, and at these moments we need every kind of comfort. Recognising this need, a group of ladies and gentlemen formed the CHUFT Blanketeers – a group who bring knitted comfort. A GREAT IDEA The idea for the group was a bit of an accident – a knitter suggested to nurse Sarah Sands that a blanket she had could be used to prettify the room of a lady receiving palliative care at the Colchester hospital where Sarah worked. This blanket was cosy and comfortable and spritzed with the patient’s perfume so that the room smelt nice. When the lady passed away the blanket was given to her daughter Susi, who had fond memories of it, and said…

Dr Luke Dixon, Co-Founder Charity The Bee Friendly Trust Established 2016 What do you do? Honey bee populations are struggling and we’re trying to change that! The Bee Friendly Trust works hard to create a world where honey bees and other pollinators have the habitats they need in order to thrive. We do this by planting up railway station platforms and neglected spaces with flowers and fruit trees to form nationwide pollinator corridors. We then work with community groups to keep these habitats blooming and buzzing and, more recently, we have begun collaborating with local artists on unique, engaging and informative bee-themed sculptures (that double up as bee hotels) and murals. FAN FOR LIFE I am a huge fan of Poldark and thought you might like to see my Ross Poldark dolls. The Scything Ross doll is adapted from a doll in the Knitting for Gold book by Sue McBride. My Ross Poldark dressed as a gentleman is based on Alan Dart’s Pirate from his Irresistible Gifts to Knit book. For the Scything Ross I used the pattern for the basic male doll in the Knitting for Gold pattern book by Sue McBride and then used the boots and trousers for the dressage doll in the same book. The Victoria and Albert Museum has collated a series of knitting patterns from the 1940s, when knitting was at its peak of popularity and a serious part of the war effort. Women were encouraged to do their part for their country by raising their needles and knitting for the troops. The Second World War might seem like an unlikely source of inspiration, but it helped me with my latest knitting project and not just when it came to finding a pattern. Knitter Nina Dodd and photographer Joseph Ford combined their creativity to produce a series of ‘invisible jumpers’, knitted designs that seemingly blend into their background.
