STAR LETTER INSPIRATIONAL JEAN How sad to read of Jean Greenhowe’s passing. Her patterns were so inspiring and over the years, I have knitted many of them for members of my family. I also made the baker with the cake for several birthdays. I am retired now, but when I was a teacher, I made lots of her small snowmen and Santas which we sold for our annual Christmas charity event. I also adapted her big Santa every year, by making him even larger and we raffled him. Since then I have made her snow folk to sell on a charity stall. What’s the pinnacle for a football supporter? Well, for football fan Farzana Chaudry, it’s always involved the FA Cup – the dream, the desire that her favourite team would make it to another final. So, when Watford FC (aka the Hornets) reached the semi-finals in 2019, the only way she could calm her mounting anxiety was to knit. The result? A fantastic team of knitted Watford FC players, which Farzana displayed proudly in her windows for all to see. “It wasn’t too difficult to decide who to knit,” Farzana tells us. “I chose striker Troy Deeney and our goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.” Farzana even treated them to a little photo shoot with a cup, adding ribbons in team colours – although in hindsight, that might have been tempting fate as Watford…
