Jennifer May Production Assistant STAR LETTER VILLAGE LIFE My daughter-in-law saw a knitted village online. I got very excited and my grandchildren (aged five and six) did too! From this pattern I put my own ideas into action. My husband did the architectural work with foam board for the building frames. Then I covered them with knitting – the roofs come off for extra fun! The base is plywood covered with matting, but I put the school on a blackboard so I could chalk some playground games. What a year it’s been for Tom Daley! Knitters all over the world looked on in awe at the decorated diver during the recent 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and not only at the tear-jerking gold medal win in the 10m synchronised diving and bronze in the individual event, but because in between events he would sit diligently in the stands and knit! The local people of Northumbria will be familiar with the traditional Guernsey or ‘gansey’ knitted sweater, sported by fishermen along the coast. Villages such as Seahouses, Craster, Amble, Newbiggin and Cullercoats all had their own individual design of intricate stitches. The 5ply pure wool combined with narrow gauge needles, made for a taut fabric giving the gansey its ability to turn water. With the arrival of man-made fibres and cheap mass-produced clothing, interest died out in the traditional close-fitting, usually seamless garment, often knitted in dark blue. Charity Action for Working Horses and Donkeys Established 1934 What do they do? Brooke is a UK-based international charity which works to improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules around the developing world. There are currently 100 million of these animals working worldwide, earning an income that around 600 million people rely on to put food on their tables, send their children to school and build better futures for themselves and their families.
