During a recent visit to the fishing town of Whitby in North Yorkshire, I followed the Whitby Heritage Sculpture Trail which is a series of wire sculptures made by local sculptor Emma Stothard depicting various local history characters, all with a connection to the sea. There are nine characters including sailors, a fishwife, herring girls who followed the trawlers to prepare the fish, a photographer and a woman sitting calmly in the sunshine eternally knitting a gansey, a hard-wearing tightly-knitted fisherman’s jumper. ROUND AND ROUND I was asked to knit this bus. I took the idea from a school bus pattern and put the features on as requested. It has certainly been well received and even taken to bed! After being an avid crocheter, Susan Ashford decided to try her hand at knitting – and fell in love! After attempting to create a few animals from patterns, Susan decided she wanted to go mini, and set out to find a pattern for a small mouse figure – but was unable to find one anywhere. So, she decided to give it a go herself and after many, many stops, starts and tweaks, finally perfected her tiny mouse make. SUPERB SUPERHERO! This is my version of Alan Dart’s superhero from issue 92 of Simply Knitting in 2012. I knitted him for my great-grandson Toby, who is four years old. I do hope Toby enjoys playing with him just as much as I have enjoyed making him! This is the second superhero I have knitted – Archie, my grandson who is five now, loves to play with the superhero which I made for him last year when he was four. I am 77 years old and I love knitting toys for my grandchildren, as family gifts and for charity. Occupation: Home-educating mum Where: Bristol How long have you been knitting? My nanna taught me to knit when I was young, possibly eight or nine. I was hopeless but she was very patient – it didn’t really click. But since starting a family I took up knitting again and have been knitting avidly for the past seven years or so. Have you been stashing all that lovely yarn since the beginning? Thankfully no, as my stash is pretty extensive! I try to only buy yarn with a project in mind, but as there are so many projects on my wishlist I have amassed a sizeable stash. Since weaving textiles became common, natural dyes have been used to create colourful garments. People in medieval times would not have worn the dull browns we might imagine, but a range of subtle green, brown, yellow and orange, producing the colours from foraged plants, berries, leaves and bark. At this time in history, most woven fabrics were woollen or linen, and it is only later that cottons and silks became available. The process for dyeing onto animal fibres is different from dyeing on plant fibres, and trial and error would have taught what worked best.
