COLOUR-CODED MARKERS Stitch markers are my colour-coded lifesavers! I used to throw in random markers, but I’d constantly forget what they meant. Now, I assign different colours – one for increases, another for pattern repeats, and a special one for key sections like the beginning of a round. It keeps me from second-guessing myself and makes complex patterns much easier to follow. I even use locking stitch markers to track row counts or mark mistakes before fixing them. The German twisted cast-on is a great method to use for top-down socks, mittens and other cuffs that would benefit from having a little stretch. It is strong yet stretchy, which is important if you are looking for a snug, even cuff that isn’t too tight at the cast-on edge. It starts in a similar way to the long-tail cast-on, or the thumb method. It’s fun to do, the first row is nice and easy to knit or rib into and, because of the added twists in each stitch, the work will spring back into shape nicely after it has been stretched out.
