YOU WILL NEED • Pair of flip flops • Patterned T-shirt • Basic sewing kit Jennie says: “This is a quick and simple restyle. All you need is a pair of flip flops and a T-shirt. Team with a summer dress and you’re good to go!” CUTTINGTHE STRIPS Step one Separate the front and back of your T-shirt by cutting along the seams, so you have two panels. Use one panel for each flip flop and make them in the same way. Step two Take one panel and fold it in half vertically, down the length of the T-shirt panel, then into thirds vertically again. YOU WILL NEED • 2 coordinating patterned fabrics: 112x225cm (44x90in) of each • Striped fabric: 112x450cm (44x180in) • Matching thread • Basic sewing kit MEASUREMENTS This will fit a standard double-bed duvet, 200x200cm (78¾x78¾in). NOTE • Use a 1.5cm (5/8in) seam allowance. Choose bold, contemporary fabrics to make this reversible duvet cover. It can be difficult to buy fabric wide enough to fit a double bed, so it’s made with squares and strips of fabric. CUTTING OUT Step one Cut eight pieces measuring 53x53cm (20¾x20¾in) of each of the two patterned fabrics for the patchwork front. From mini pom pom trims to giant pom pom garlands in rainbow hues – we love pom poms in all their forms! These bright balls of joy will bring an instant hit of fun and colour to a room scheme or craft project, and it's so simple to make your own. We have fond memories of using yarn and cardboard to make pom poms as children, and it's still a technique we use today. Don't limit yourself to just using wool, though, as pom poms can be made from just about any material that can be cut into strips, so they're a great stash-buster. MARKING PENCIL Choose a colour that shows up on your fabric. SEAM RIPPER This sharp blade cuts through and unpicks stitches. MARKING PEN Transfer markings to your fabric, then wash them out when finished. TAPE MEASURE flexible fabric tape measure will take accurate measurements. IT’S IMPORTANT TO CHOOSE the correct fabric for your pattern. Most patterns give suggested fabric types that will work best with the style of garment. Use this to guide you as some patterns need more drape, body or structure than others. Fabric can be made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen, wool and silk or synthetic fibres such as acetate, acrylic, nylon, polyester, rayon and viscose. All these fabric come in different weights, or thicknesses, which suit different garments. Lightweight fabrics are ideal for lingerie, nightwear and summer clothing, and include cheesecloth, chiffon, crepe-de-chine, georgette, lawn, muslin, organdie, organza and voile. Medium-weight fabrics, which work for dresses, shirts, trousers and childrenswear, include calico, cotton, crepe, dupion, linen, poplin and finer wool. There’s no need to head to the high street to buy a pair of slim-fit trousers this summer – instead, take in an existing wide-leg pair for the perfect fit following our tutorial. PINNING YOUR NEW SEAM Step one Put your trousers on inside out and pin on both sides of your leg, starting at the point where you want to start tapering and finishing at the ankle. You’ll need to pin on the inner leg (inseam) as well as the outer leg (outseam). It’s best to pin the front and back together the same distance in from both existing seams so they hang properly. We can’t resist a pom pom! To make your own, you can go traditional and use two circles cut from a cardboard box, or a specialist pom pom maker for a quick make. Use wool or try other materials for different effects – just make sure it's colourful! WHAT YARN TO USE Pom poms are traditionally made from wool. You can use any fibre, from fluffy mohair to cotton, and any thickness – the thinner the yarn, the more you’ll have to wind. DRAPE A term used to describe the way a fabric hangs under its own weight. Different fabrics have different drape qualities. EASE The addition of extra fabric in a pattern to allow the finished garment to fit the body well. EDGESTITCH A row of stitching on the very edge of a garment, usually 2-3mm (1/16-1/8in) from the folded or seamed edge. Used to hold the fabric edge neatly in place. Use these basic hand stitches to complete your home and dressmaking projects. LADDER STITCH Used to join together and close two turned-under edges invisibly, such as on a dress lining or soft toy. Bring the needle up at 1 on one side of the seam, then in at 2 on the opposite side and out at 3, so the stitch is 3mm (1/8in) long. Push the needle back in the opposite side at 4 and out at 5. Zero-waste clothing design is avoiding fabric waste through efficiency in pattern-making and design. It’s shocking to learn that on average 15% of fabric is wasted in the fashion industry when garments are cut. It’s estimated that the global apparel industry produced around 400 billion square metres of fabric in 2015, with 60 billion square metres of fabric wasted. I told you it was shocking! For home sewers, the average amount of waste is much higher. Let’s use the Overture top I designed for this issue as an example. The optimised pattern-cutting layout shown below uses 1.75 metres of 150cm wide fabric. If you were to use this layout you would use 54% of the fabric for your garment and create 46% or 0.63m2 of waste. If 100 sewists make this…

FABRIC INSPIRATION The Overture pattern features a dress version and a blouse, and includes a classic shirt collar with a collar stand. Its design is based on a trapeze silhouette, with a light and flowing shape. In-seam pockets make the dress version practical and functional. It has no tricky closures, but instead a centre back opening along the yoke, closed with a button and rouleau loop. It features a wide centre back pleat for fullness and a dropped back hem. Techniques include finishing seams (such as French seams and a Hong Kong seam finish), adding darts, pleats, yokes and inseam pockets, sewing a collar and collar stand, and making a rouleau loop and button closure. In our opinion, few things make for a more satisfying Sunday than the pleasure of sewing something to wear, or to enhance the prettiness of our home. It’s also the reason we suspect designer Theresa Gonzalez may be a woman after our own hearts, as this is the concept she has tapped into with her beautiful book, Sunday Sews: 20 Inspired Weekend Projects. Preparing your fabric and cutting out your sewing pattern accurately is just as important as the actual sewing. Wash your fabric before you begin as fabric can shrink and run. Once dry, press it well. PREPARING THE PATTERN Patterns often come with several options of different finishes so you may have more pieces than you need. The instruction sheet will tell you which pieces to use. Roughly cut out all of the pieces outside the lines then press the pieces using a dry iron on a low heat to remove the folds and creases. CUTTING OUT THE PATTERN Choose your size using your measurements and the size chart. Cut along the corresponding lines on your pattern. When you reach any fiddly curves, take care to cut along the correct size…

ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED stitching your seam, it’s best to press it open on the wrong side so it lies flat. Sometimes it’s better to press it to one side to reduce bulk but the pattern instructions will tell you this. Usually the seam allowances are left as they are as they help to strengthen the seam, but sometimes they cause too much bulk so they are trimmed to half their original width. If your fabric has a tendency to fray you should neaten the raw edges after you have worked the seam. There are several ways of doing this. To machine-finish them, set your sewing machine to the zigzag stitch then stitch close to the raw edge all the way along. The zigzag must be small enough to stop…

“SAYING I AM PROUD of this dress feels like a bit of an understatement. Back in August 2015 I commissioned the lovely gals at By Hand London to create a pattern for us to feature in our February issue. I wanted it to be flattering, elegant and have a beautiful floaty skirt. Naturally, I couldn’t wait for the paper samples to arrive so I made mine using the huge cardstock proofs from our printers (which were a nightmare to cut out) before the magazine had even gone on sale.
