Blanca suddenly had a need to sew one night in her pre-teen years after seeing the Beatles premier on television. There was an unused sewing machine in the house and it was powered up in minutes. She just had to make a Beatles suit! With the help and patience of a neighbourhood dressmaker who agreed to tutor her, the suit was made in a few weeks, in a turquoise dupioni with gold buttons and grey lining. “Of course, it didn’t get worn much except to run errands with my mum, but it looked glorious in my wardrobe and I loved seeing it hanging there.” From that time on she was inspired by menswear and studied the fashion of James Bond films for style ideas.
