Make your circle scarf in a loose lacy fabric for a summer accessory. We used 140cm wide fabric for the scarf. Increase or decrease the width as you like for a narrower or wider scarf. Before assembling the scarf add embellishments, embroidery or a trim in between the seam. Likewise for the headband, embellish it in any way you like, prior to assembling for a look unique to you. You could also add some detailing after assembling to ensure it sits on the top of the headband. 1 Store your rulers flat if possible and in a drawer or a sealed box. This will help to avoid pesky scratches that can impair the measurements on the rulers. Alternatively you can hang them by the holes at the tend. 2 Clean your rulers with a damp cloth and a little washing up liquid, you can also rinse them in warm water if need be. Avoid using anything that could scratch the surface. 3 Don’t be tempted to draw on your rulers, while it might be helpful for this project, you’ll be kicking yourself in the future when the marked lines no longer apply and won’t come off. HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF ACCURATELY ALWAYS MEASURE YOURSELF BEFORE you choose a pattern size to cut out. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. Use a fabric tape measure as it’ll curve around your body well for accuracy. You can measure on your own if you stand in front of a mirror, but, for best results, ask a friend to help so they can check the tape measure is sitting…

We spent all our time in our new little sewing bubble getting to know each other. My first memory of picking up a needle and thread is at my Nana’s house when she looked after me during the school holidays. ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED stitching your seam, it’s best to press it open on the wrong side so it lies flat. Sometimes it’s better to press it to one side to reduce bulk but the pattern instructions will tell you this. Usually the seam allowances are left as they are as they help to strengthen the seam, but sometimes they cause too much bulk so they are trimmed to half their original width. If your fabric has a tendency to fray you should neaten the raw edges after you have worked the seam. There are several ways of doing this. To machine-finish them, set your sewing machine to the zigzag stitch then stitch close to the raw edge all the way along. The zigzag must be small enough to stop…

LADDER STITCH Used to join together and close two turned-under edges invisibly, such as on a dress lining or soft toy. Ask me what my favourite thing is about sewing, and my mind turns straight to my Agnes Skirt pattern. It was the first pattern I released, and it’s named after my lovely grandma, who also used to sew and design clothes. But more than that, the Agnes Skirt represents an ‘aha’ moment for me.
