“Since my childhood, I have always appreciated colourful garments. I grew up in an environment where it was a must in the outfits of people surrounding me, regardless of gender. So, when I moved to Paris, I was very frustrated by what was offered for menswear. We always get the same palette of blue, grey, black and beige... I love being able to combine colours and patterns to create unique outfits. Learning to sew had always interested me, but I didn’t start properly until I bought my first second-hand sewing machine in my 20s. Once I started, I was hooked and began making my own bags, quilts and accessories. I even set up a shop on Etsy and planned to sell quilts and baby clothes, but after some time I realised I prefer to sew as a hobby rather than as a business. I enjoyed making clothes for my children when they were small, and although I made a few things for myself, I didn’t take up dressmaking more seriously until a few years later. Organic cotton – Organic cotton is grown and made in a way that’s kinder to the environment with no synthetic pesticides, and having no nasties on it means less water is needed during the cleansing process. Organic hemp – The stalks of the cannabis sativa plant can be utilised for their fibres. Once it has been pressed it has a similar texture to cotton but it is much more durable, making it have a longer life. ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED stitching your seam, it’s best to press it open on the wrong side so it lies flat. Sometimes it’s better to press it to one side to reduce bulk but the pattern instructions will tell you this. Usually the seam allowances are left as they are as they help to strengthen the seam, but sometimes they cause too much bulk so they are trimmed to half their original width. If your fabric has a tendency to fray you should neaten the raw edges after you have worked the seam. There are several ways of doing this. To machine-finish them, set your sewing machine to the zigzag stitch then stitch close to the raw edge all the way along. The zigzag must be small enough to stop…
