Social media has connected like-minded crafters across the globe and allowed us to both be inspired and learn from people we might never have come across without it. As I type this letter, we've been enjoying lots of sunshine here in the UK. Whilst it's been glorious (pass the Aperol Spritz!), I've been struggling to stay cool on the move. My go-to in this weather (with as many freckles as I have) is a wide-brim hat like the one on page 23 so I'll be adding some raffia embroidery to mine next! I've got heaps of midi-length dresses in my wardrobe too, so I can't wait to try my hand at the self-draft apron dress on page 52. Just my style! An estimated 300k tonnes of unwanted clothing hits UK landfills every year. And every year these mountains of textile waste, hidden beneath our feet, grow at a faster rate than they break down. Denim clothing for example, (made from cotton, a natural fibre that takes a long time to break down) can take several decades, or even hundreds of years to decompose. Synthetic materials such as polyester or spandex, can take even longer. And some never truly do. As these underground clothing mountains break down, they're contributing to greenhouse gasses and (in some cases) leaching chemicals and microplastics into the ground. HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF ACCURATELY ALWAYS MEASURE YOURSELF BEFORE you choose a pattern size to cut out. The sizes do vary greatly from pattern to pattern, so it’s always best to measure yourself accurately and then refer to the pattern’s size chart to find your size. The chart will usually be printed on the pattern envelope or on the instructions inside. Measure yourself in your underwear and preferably in the bra you’ll be wearing underneath your garment as this can alter the measurements slightly. Use a fabric tape measure as it’ll curve around your body well for accuracy. You can measure on your own if you stand in front of a mirror, but, for best results, ask a friend to help so they can check the tape measure is sitting…

MY FAVOURITE THING “Ready-to-wear menswear shirts always result in buttons popping open at my belly, especially when I sit down. Unfortunately, the patterns that I bought in my early thirties when I took up sewing, had the exact same problem. So, I started with a tailoring course.
