By the time you read this welcome note, several cities in India will likely see the start of the rainy season. Since humidity (and dust) is the enemy of electronics, we suggest you safely store your expensive equipment in humidity controlled cabinets between uses. At the same time, don’t be overly concerned about using your gear during the rains. As long as you take reasonable care and avoid water splashes on the equipment, it should be fine. Several modern camera bodies as well as lenses are ‘weather resistant’. Just keep in mind that ‘weather resistant’ does not mean ‘waterproof’. Tokina has announced the release of the SZ 33 mm f/1.2 manual prime lens for Fuji X and Sony E (APS-C) camera mounts. The lens comes with a 50 mm full-frame equivalent focal length and uses a 62 mm front filter thread. Its optical design consists of 9 elements in 7 groups and the elements come with multi-coatings. It sports an 11 blade aperture diaphragm, features an aperture range of f/1.2 through f/16 and has a minimum focussing distance of 50 cm. Both versions of the lens come with a clickless aperture ring for ‘smooth adjustment’, with the body measuring 71 mm in diameter, 87.5 mm in length and weighing 605 g. Laowa has launched an Indiegogo campaign for its new Nanomorph Anamorphic lenses. The first three Nanomorph lenses are on Indiegogo, including a 27 mm t/2.8, 35 mm t/2.4 and 50 mm t/2.4. The lenses are made for S35 and MFT sensors with Canon EF, PL-mount, Canon R, Sony E, M43, DJI DL, Nikon Z, L-mount and Fuji X-mount options. It is reported that the lenses have a minimum focussing distance of 43 cm with the 27 mm t/2.8 lens and 70 cm for the 50 mm t/2.4 lens. The company says that the lens was designed specifically for street photography, focussing on “capturing the decisive moment with hyperfocal focussing.” The lens’ optical design is made up of 6 elements in 6 groups, including 1 high-refractive element and 2 extra-low dispersion elements. Canon has announced the launch of the EOS R7 and the EOS R10, its first cameras in the EOS R mirrorless system to be equipped with APS-C image sensors. Launched alongside the two cameras are the RF-S 18-45 mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens and the RF-S 18-150 mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. Supported by the DIGIC X image processing engine, the EOS R7 and EOS R10 inherit the autofocussing (AF) technology that harnesses the deep learning-based subject detection capabilities of the EOS iTR AF X system. Battery powered portable flashguns (or just flashes for short) are handy as sources of light - either as the main illumination or as a fill. The main disadvantage is that flashes when mounted on your camera on the accessory shoe (as it is commonly done), give rather unflattering results (Picture 1) as they will cast harsh shadows at unwanted places. Plus, there will be no provision to attach any light modifiers like softboxes, umbrellas, etc. More importantly, there is no scope to position the flash where you want. The latter is important when photographing portraits, still-life, etc. All these drawbacks can be removed and a flash can be used effectively, when you keep it off-camera. ON1 has announced another update for Photo Raw 2022. The version 2022.5 update is expected to improve upon ON1 Resize, noise reduction, Sky Swap AI, additional camera support etc. Its Resize AI software is scheduled to be fully integrated into ON1 Photo Raw 2022 with the 2022.5 update. This software uses AI to resize even old and low-resolution images, with details. Improvement in NoNoise AI promises to deliver better results with non-raw image file formats such as JPG, TIF or PSD files. The update also includes lens corrections for improvement in Raw image quality. The LensMatch automatic correction removes distortion while shooting Raw with camera-maker matched lenses. Sony is accelerating its goal of achieving carbon neutrality throughout the entire value chain, including scopes 1 to 3, by ten years from 2050 to 2040, and its target for achieving 100% renewable energy in its own operations also by ten years, from 2040 to 2030. The company reports that it will accelerate its target year for carbon neutrality, i.e. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, from 2050 to 2040. Additionally, it will also target other emissions originating from stages such as products, supply chains, and logistics (scope 3), aiming for net zero emissions achieved in all scopes.
