Hip Hop has always been more than beats and rhymes. It’s about expression, fast-moving wit, legacy, innovation, and, for the artists, creating their own style and breaking from the norm. From the heavy rope chains of the ‘80s to today’s custom bussdown masterpieces, ice tells a story of hustle, triumph, and self-made royalty. How did you get your start in the jewellery industry? When I was 21, I found a ring-making course in Hatton Garden. At the time, I felt I lacked creativity in my life and that course changed everything for me. Later, I discovered an enamel ring at London’s V&A Museum, and thought, ‘that looks like a tattoo, but on jewellery,’ and I became obsessed with this concept. What’s your connection with tattoos? My father used to be a deep-sea diver, and he’s got lots of tattoos. We’re just a family of tattooed people. I’m covered in fine lines, cute little snakes and hearts. Describe your personal style. Ara Vartanian has always danced to his own beat. The São Paolo-based designer initially ‘astonished’ his gem-dealing father by striking out on his own, first by working in finance, then by establishing his eponymous jewellery brand in 2002. There is a ring in the David Morris archives that perfectly sums up the London jeweller’s relationship with gems. The green-fingered couturier, Christian Dior, had a lifelong passion for gardens nurturing his flowers as attentively as he tended to his fashion collections.
