But beginning in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when winemaking became more sophisticated and the expensive methods of bottling and corking were introduced, the cost of drinking good wine became prohibitive to all but the wealthy. FOR STYLISH PRODUCTIONS For homeowners Beth and Mark Sharman, whose blended family includes five grown children, the renovation of their forever home was a major undertaking. “Though we started the process with our architect and builder, I didn’t hire a designer to walk me through each step, and I regret not doing that early on, because picking out all the flooring, tiles, fixtures, and countertops was completely overwhelming,” says Beth Powell-Sharman, who eventually brought on interior designer Kaycie LaGrone of Circa Studio to help furnish the home. Is it necessary for true connoisseurs to own a wine cellar or well-stocked bar? “Not necessarily so,” says Georgia architect Hoyte Johnson. During his years of working with celebrated architect Norman Askins and now managing his own firm, Johnson has designed everything from large, cask-lined basements and residential tasting rooms to full-fledged wet bars that would make even the most discerning sipper envious. “Some of my clients want these amenities more for entertaining friends and guests than merely for themselves.” One of the most important aspects Johnson must consider when undertaking such a project is knowing beforehand how much wine and liquor a client has or intends to store. “That’s always my starting point,” he says. “I also find out which bottles are the most prized among their collection and…

Southern Home (SH): If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? Janie Molster (JM): An English teacher—I majored in English literature in college. SH: When did you realize that decorating was your destiny, versus Austen and Shakespeare? JM: I was young and newly married. We bought our first house, and I was long on creativity but short on budget. I really had fun and was experimental in some of the things I did. I remember being seven months pregnant with my first child, on the second step of a ladder, and rolling paint on the walls because I couldn’t stand one more hour in that room with the current color. When Michael Mitchell first came to the Daniel Island home, he noticed it lacked one thing: color. “It was a pretty white house, but she is a color person,” Mitchell says of his client Shelly Leeke, who with her husband, Derek Miller, had recently purchased the home. Mitchell and his husband, Tyler Hill, own Charleston’s Mitchell Hill, a full-service interiors firm with an expansive King Street showroom. “We do everything from reupholstering and curating art collections to full-home renovations,” he says. Washington, D.C., designer Mary Douglas Drysdale epitomizes the interior designer ideal, with longtime clients returning to her for every transition in their lives. For a recent project, the 11th for a sophisticated and well-traveled couple, Drysdale crafted a glamorous condominium in a Bethesda, Maryland, high-rise. “My first project for them, a shingle-style house in Maine, was more than 20 years ago,” says Drysdale. “That was followed by a Colonial-style house in Potomac and other historic grand houses in Maryland. I have seen their family expand and then their children leave home and begin their own lives. As a couple entering retirement and expecting their sixth grandchild, Phyllis and Jim Lackey knew they wanted a home that could not only accommodate their growing family but also be a comfortable space for just the two of them. The new build in Franklin, Tennessee, sits on a quiet, private cul-de-sac and backs up to a farm—allowing the homeowners to hear the horses as they sit on their covered porch.
