Beloved author Maud Hart Lovelace once wrote, “It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside.” We know just the scene she was describing, don’t we? Summer in the South sweeps in on carefree breezes bearing the fragrance of flowers evocative of all the lovely Junes we’ve enjoyed since childhood. Once the roses are in bloom, that symphony of scents is almost like a magic elixir, making the days cheerier, calmer—even cooler! I love to take advantage of the wonderful weather and gather a few friends for lunch in the garden. GARDEN VARIETY Set in a thicket of trees, the Meyerson family’s backyard takes advantage of its natural Alabama setting while also providing privacy. With room to entertain as a top priority, Garden designer Troy Rhone divided the area into a central lawn and a series of patios that hold several seating and dining options. The space works beautifully whether the couple hosts cocktails for a large crowd or invites just a few friends for a more intimate meal. Like most Southerners, Candy Meyerson loves to host outdoor get-togethers, especially during balmy summer months. BACON-TOPPED DEVILED EGGS MAKES 3 DOZEN 18 large eggs ½ cup mayonnaise 6 tablespoons sweet pickle relish 1 tablespoon dill pickle juice 2 teaspoons yellow mustard ½ teaspoon ground black pepper Garnish: cooked crumbled bacon 1. Place eggs in a large saucepan with enough cold water to cover; cook over high heat until water begins to boil. 2. Reduce heat to medium; simmer eggs for 10 minutes. 3. Remove from heat; drain eggs, and rinse with cold water. Peel eggs, discarding shells. Halve eggs lengthwise. 4. Remove yolks, and place in a small bowl. Mash yolks with a fork until crumbly. Add mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, dill pickle juice, mustard, and pepper, stirring until well combined. Spoon egg yolk mixture evenly into egg whites. Garnish with bacon, if desired. FRIED…

THE NAME GAME No one knows for sure how the community of Bell Buckle got its quirky name, but the story told most often is that one of the first explorers in the area found carvings of a bell and a buckle on a tree near a creek. The creek was named for the curious markings, and the town later adopted the name as well. Once the major stockyard on the rail line from Nashville to Chattanooga, Bell Buckle thrived during the late 1800s.
