Fletcher Horn spent his early youth in Alabama hunting, fishing, and often accompanying his mother, an interior designer, to antiques shops and clients’ homes. This informal design education fostered his affinity for history in décor. “Since childhood,” Fletcher recalls, “I enjoyed drawing house designs.” He spent subsequent summers as a carpenter’s apprentice, learning about wood crafting and dreaming up furniture ideas. While working in corporate finance, he and his wife built a Tudor-style home based on a rendering Fletcher had drawn as a young boy. “Increasingly,” he says, “people started asking for my help incorporating antique wood, brick, and stone for their homes.” As he was searching for ways to spend more time with his twin boys, Fletcher realized that a career combining his love of carpentry, design, heritage, and…

A little bubbly goes a long way toward making any celebration even more special. Leave it to Southern Lady to come up with a beautiful presentation for something as simple as icing down beverages. Place tiny flower blossoms—pansies are particularly lovely—petals, and mint leaves at the bottom of each compartment in ice-cube trays, and place in the freezer. TUCKED INTO A LOVELY BEATRIZ BALL pitcher in the classically styled Latur pattern, the ruffled blooms of David Austin’s ‘Patience’ white garden rose mingle with bright-faced anemones, soft pink majolica spray roses, tiny green berzillia berries, and fuzzy little pompons of brunia. Softer Side After more than a decade in their home in North Augusta, South Carolina, Renee and Steve Kendrick decided it was time to trade in heavy wood finishes and rich, dark colors for this soothing palette in their master suite. A Suite Oasis “We were ready for something lighter with cleaner lines,” says Renee. They washed their bedroom in beiges and grays, then carried the same hues into the master bath. “We fell in love with the [bathroom] floor first, and the rest just came together,” she says. Once the tile floor was in place, she added Quartz countertops and the pièce de résistance, her soaker tub. Forget faux volcanoes and Styrofoam planets—Joel Dondis’s sixth-grade science project was a soufflé. At an age when most kids are watching cartoons and munching on Cheerios, this Lake Charles, Louisiana, native was whipping up Saturday morning breakfast for his parents. Inevitably, this chef-to-be headed off to the Culinary Institute of America for formal training and, after graduating in 1986, landed a job at the famed Schlosshotel in Germany. A Talented Team Cynthia and Bill McKettrick often visited the almost 5-acre lot they owned where their house now sits, daydreaming about the possibilities. When Bill came home with an offer on that land, they made the decision to begin designing their West Lake residence. They worked with Garren Construction to design and build it, and they chose Laurie McRae Interiors to direct the design. “There’s not a room in this house that I do not love,” says Cynthia. Their previous Williamsburg-style abode featured darker jewel tones throughout, but in this new home, Cynthia wanted soft colors and as much sunshine as possible. Gracious Welcome Handsome eight-panel doors found at Southern Accents Architectural Antiques in Cullman offer a grand greeting, while the brick columns flanking the entry were copied from those gracing a local church. Inside, the foyer hints at the elegance that awaits within. A neutral palette allows the furnishings to truly shine, especially those made of dark wood, like the foyer table and the custombuilt mahogany piece that hides the television. In the great room, opposite, the designer placed two small cocktail tables side by side in lieu of one large one. While working for a consulting firm in Atlanta, Katherine Weeks Mulford of North Carolina and Lee Addison Lesley of Virginia became fast friends. Both graphic designers, they spent their days working on websites for clients like American Cancer Society and UPS. But once they discovered a shared interest in jewelry, Katherine recalls, “We would spend our lunch breaks sneaking away to bead stores.” Through the years, they saw their friendship develop into a partnership, and in 2012, they launched Addison Weeks jewelry. “We try to create pieces that are classic and timeless but also modern,” explains Katherine.
