When Anita Rankin and her husband decided to downsize, the seasoned designer had no intention of parting with all the furnishings and fixtures she’s collected over the years. Instead, she dreamed up a house that let her scale back without sacrificing the generous wall space and sense of grandeur she’d grown attached to in her family’s 4,500-square-foot homestead overlooking Mobile Bay. Sparkling Clementine Cocktail MAKES 8 SERVINGS 1½ cups gin¾ cup Clementine Simple Syrup(recipe follows)1¾ cups brut sparkling wine, chilledGarnish: sliced clementine 1. Built in 1906 for the first permanent, year-round resident of the scenic mountaintop community near Chattanooga, this beautiful sandstone house had all but lost its luster when Lisa and Scott Maclellan purchased it at an auction about a decade ago. The once-grand structure had been converted to apartments in the 1930s and required a two-year renovation for full restoration to its former glory. Terry Barker, senior partner of River Street Architecture, helped the couple turn an empty shell into a breathtaking home, complete with Corinthian columns, a second-floor balustrade, and a circular staircase. Furnishing the home was a true labor of love for Lisa, who made all the design choices. She searched the country for the carved-marble mantels, period mirrors, and exquisite chandeliers that give the mansion its French flavor.…

Kahlúa Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake MAKES 1 (15-CUP) BUNDT CAKE ½ cup unsalted butter, softened2 cups granulated sugar1 tablespoon vanilla extract3 large egg whites, room temperature¾ (4-ounce) bar semisweet chocolate, chopped¾ cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder¾ cup Kahlúa*, warmed3 cups all-purpose flour1 tablespoon baking powder1½ teaspoons kosher salt¾ teaspoon baking soda1½ cups whole buttermilk1½ cups semisweet chocolate chipsGarnish: confectioners’ sugar 1.
