ONE OF THE things that past Southwest Art editors have done so masterfully over five decades is finding new artists to bring to collectors and art lovers. In 2000, the magazine launched its first 21 Under 31 feature and has shared with our audience artists who have become some of the most recognizable working today. For my first year working on this section (pg. 60), our team dove deep to research, review submissions and nominations, and build a list that shows the evolution of subject matter, medium, style and interests. THE LOVELAND HIGH PLAINS Arts Council’s 39th annual Sculpture in the Park will be held at the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, Colorado, displaying thousands of sculptures as an outdoor gallery. During the event, from August 11 to 13, collectors will find more than 2,000 three-dimensional works in mediums such as bronze, glass, wood, ceramic, stone and more produced by artists around the world working in styles varying from representational to abstract. Collectors and patrons have the unique opportunity to meet the featured artists face-to-face and discuss their work. Half of the artists were invited to return to the 2023 show, while the other half were selected by a blind jury that resulted in welcoming 27 new sculptors to this yearly celebration. FROM THE FIRST glance of painter Peggy Immel and photographer Steve Immel’s joint exhibition, Immel + Immel: Side by Side—opening at Wilder Nightingale Fine Art with a reception Saturday, September 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.—it becomes clear that the show’s title refers to more than the fact that this creative couple has been together for over 50 years and is celebrating a fourth joint biannual show. This time, the dozen finished works from each of them appear side by side with earlier stages of their creation: a field study or preliminary sketch for Peggy’s New Mexico landscapes or a small print of what Steve saw in his viewfinder before ultimately transforming the image with photo-editing software. “THE LATCHSTRING IS always out for you” was the welcoming way late-19th- and early-20th-century cowboy artist Charles Marion Russell often concluded his beautifully illustrated letters to friends. Such a spirit of warm hospitality characterizes The Russell, an annual art auction that has served as the primary fundraiser for the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, since 1969. The approximately 210 historic and contemporary works in this year’s event have been on display for museumgoers since late June, and the culminating four-day sale draws as many as 500 aspiring purchasers. FOUNDED IN 1960, the Society of Animal Artists is devoted to showcasing some of today’s best wildlife art. This year, for the prestigious international organization’s 63rd annual exhibition, a panel of jurors selected 118 works by members to be displayed at the Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. The selected pieces showcase a variety of subjects, styles, media and techniques, ensuring that the exhibition will have a wide scope. “It’s an extremely broad show with seven different countries represented in the exhibition, and the subject matter is varied,” says Wes Siegrist, executive director of Society of Animal Artists. “You get a lion, zebra, otter, great blue heron, but we also get some very non-typical subject matter as well…there are insects and species you might not have heard of…

PEREGRINE O’GORMLEY Where do you live and work? At my home studio in La Conner, Washington. What interested you in sculpture, and what is your main source of inspiration? Both my father and my grandfather were sculptors. Sculpture was a source of joy from about the age of 4. It has always been something that draws me in. Ideas that come to me inspire the imagery and the pull to create the physical forms. The natural world provides limitless subject matter, but the ideas are more about human experience than about the subjects themselves. THE WEST THROUGH the eyes of painter Eric Bowman stands the test of time not only because of his style and techniques, but also because each narrative captures moments of life that connect with viewers and allows for them to complete the story on their own. The title of his new solo show, More to the Picture, at Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Los Angeles, is a reflection of this idea. “I purposefully leave the narrative kind of vague,” says Bowman. “The viewer can come to that conclusion about what is coming or what is ‘more to the picture.’ Doing that involves the viewer more and they have a bit more interest in the work.” Bowman began painting for the exhibition over a year ago and will have 15 new works…

JOHN MOYERS AND Terri Kelly Moyers will have their first presentation of paintings at Legacy Gallery Santa Fe in the exhibition Wandering West from August 11 to 21 with a reception opening night from 5 to 7 p.m. The array of works showcases their travels throughout the American West, and beyond, and tells a great deal about the stories that led to the inspirations for their paintings. FOR OVER A century, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts has hosted the premier fine art fair for Native American artists to gather and sell their beautiful creations. Santa Fe Indian Market, marking its 101st edition August 18 to 20, takes place mainly on the famed Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where exhibitor booths line the streets. More than 1,000 artists from over 200 tribal communities participate, giving a vast range of art in terms of style—traditional and contemporary—and category such as jewelry, pottery, textiles, paintings and more.
