Dwelling in the Mini-Residential/Commercial Complex_ The client, who is an ordinary salaried worker, wanted a home where he and his family could create good memories and also generate profit. The project had to include a dreamy attic, a profitable commercial space, and rentable studios and office spaces on a 200m² site. I usually start off my lectures by explaining the meaning of the name, THE_SYSTEM LAB. A myriad of environmental factors exist around us, all with their own unique system and all optimized to sustain a unique organic organisation. We name this ‘THE SYSTEM’. As in nature, all architecture projects have their own ecosystem. Various items, such as the project costs, timespan, the client’s position, the site’s context, the architectural regulations, and changes to the user group, are all critical elements that will dictate the success of a project. The first architectural critics award in Korea was presented to the winner of the Architecture Critics Competition held by the design magazine Ccumim in 1984. This year Yoon Sunkyeong won the Heritage Tomorrow Prize with ‘Deeply Rooted House, Growing Seonggwak Maeul’. Competition for the architectural design idea, the Heritage Tomorrow Project 6 was held to propose a new prototype for the village block for the gradual redevelopment of Haengchon Village, Jongno-gu. While the scale of space in ‘Deeply Rooted House, Growing Seonggwak Maeul’ is kept lower than the height of Hanyang Doseong (City Wall), the ground level could be emptied with a strategy aggregating plots which place a dense residential space across 30 units in the basement. The nominated work for the third rendition of the Young Architects Programme (YAP), Temp’L has been revealed to the public in the courtyard of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA Seoul). Temp’L, so named by combining the words for temporary and temple, is a pavilion in the shape of a capsized shipwreck, reaching up to 8m tall. Left as an isolated island in city centre of Seoul for four decades, Nodeul Island has now ended its long journey at last reaching the third stage of completion on June 22. More architecture awards are being organized than ever before. At the start of the new millennium, domestic architecture awards were limited to only six awards, including the Good Place Award and the Korean Architecture Award. Today, more than 60 domestic architecture awards have flourished in their affiliations with various institutions, such as governmental organizations, local governments, architectural and academic associations. In spite of this deluge of architecture awards, many doubt whether this has contributed to stabilizing the field of architecture over these past years. Many of these awards prosper, having been arranged according to similar circumstances, with the promise of interchangeable prizes, yet, it is rare to find an award that has been uniquely formulated with its own identity. Arko Art Center in Daehak-ro opened two exhibitions concurrently on the 8th of last month. Proposing ‘Refugees’ and the ‘Homeless’ as their keywords, the exhibitions don’t seem to be deeply related to each other as they are based on different genres, such as architecture and visual culture as well as different social contexts.
