WHEN we get used to being in our comfort zone, there can be an element of going through the motions that is hard to shake. I wouldn’t describe any of my hunting as stale, but balancing the many situations I find myself in outdoors, as well as working a regular job, sometimes begins to wear me out mentally. AFTER eight months hunting a few thousand acres of tight scrub and semi-open improved pasture I had finally removed what I believed to be the Alpha wild dog from the area. Activity had reduced with much less visible sign, so I decided to move my focus to an open hilly section of the property where the property owner has once sighted a pack. My approach was from the west with just over 1km to walk through a nearly mature chest high sorghum crop. With winds predominantly easterly my approach was going to be a little more time consuming in distance and speed. 2020. What a whirlwind of a year, COVID-19 paused all recreational activities including hunting, I dislocated my hip, left a relationship and I moved back to New South Wales from the small town of Camooweal on the Queensland Northern Territory border. OVER the years there’s been a tremendous change in optics for rimfire scopes. Beginning in the early 1950s, rimfire shooters began to see the development of scopes better proportioned for rimfire rifles. American optical makers like Mossberg, Weaver, Bushnell and Redfield started producing perfectly acceptable rimfire scopes, with trim, slim lines scaled to match the average .22 sporter. The majority of early rimfire scopes were cheap, mostly 4x with a straight tube and 3/4” or 7/8” tubes. Other names that I remember are Mark, Bentley, Savage and Nikko-Stirling, but a few higher quality scopes were available, including a pair of Pecar Juniors in 2-1/2x and 4x26 with 26mm tubes. MY partner and went camping in Northern Queensland and decided to go for a walk along a nearby billabong just as the sun was going down and took the .243 rifle. A stock shape that pleases one man may strike another as being ugly. During the past seven decades stock design has undergone a great deal of change, but fashions change too, and not always for the better. Some pretty awful stocks have been and are still being inflicted on the shooting public.
