TESTING gun-care products is usually not that easy, not because it’s hard to clean firearms but because most of the products are not all that different from their competitors. I sort of dreaded going into this review because I knew it’d take time to complete but I didn’t know if I’d find out anything worth saying. MOST Australian state firearms legislation has a clause fairly clearly stating that anyone who wants a firearms licence must be a “fit and proper person” (or words to that effect). On the face of it, this seems pretty straightforward — basically that serious criminals and dangerous people shouldn’t be allowed gun licenses, right? If only it were that simple. While the intent behind that clause seems fair and reasonable, in reality it’s become a catch-all to deny or revoke firearms licences for almost any reason. THE 9.3mm calibre has enjoyed a solid reputation in game fields all the world over for 120 years. A number of 9.3mm cartridges introduced in the early 1900s, shooting heavy .366-inch diameter bullets, are still popular with hunters. The 9.3mm family started with the 9.3x57, based on the 8mm Mauser case. The 9.3x62 came along in 1905 and the 9.3x64 Brenneke around 1910. The 9.3x74R originated in the early 1900s and is still a favourite cartridge for double rifles and combination guns. The .366 calibre then lay dormant until 2002, when Sako developed the 9.3x66mm Sako for its new Sako 75 family of bolt-action rifles. AS tech gets smaller it often gets harder to use but Garmin’s tiny eTrex 22x bucks the trend with its sensible and well-considered design. The biggest contributor to this is the mini joystick-style navigation knob, which is intuitive and quick in all the functions it provides. The 22x fits in your pocket and weighs only 147 grams with its quota of two AA batteries included. That’s my kind of GPS because you can keep it handy while trekking yet it doesn’t demand a special pouch to ride in nor add burdensome weight. A little over twenty years ago, my growing hunting ambitions led me in the direction of deer. As a teenager I had chased rabbits and foxes over hill and dale, but it took a few decades before I became enthused (the wife would say obsessed) about hunting bigger game. THE best part of my job is meeting and talking to new hunters and getting to see first hand so many great products developed for hunters as they hit the shelves. There are so many products it can be overwhelming for anyone, especially if you are unsure of what you might need. THE majority of high-range variable-power scopes are big and heavy but Leupold made its VX-5HD 3-15x44 more compact without an obscene increase in weight or bulk. It weighs 560 grams, measures 34cm and includes a number of worthwhile features. It has a 30mm tube, the new standard, which allows significantly more elevation adjustment. I’M not one to get caught up in the idea of believing an animal may have human-like traits when it comes to personality, emotions or feelings. Animals are often labelled by us as being smart or dumb, but we use these terms as they apply to our own assumptions about what they mean. DATING back to 1873, and initially loaded with black powder, the .45-70 was a US military service cartridge till 1892. Then and later it was a popular sporting round, widely used as a buffalo cartridge in the old West. It was considered obsolete after 1930 and relegated to the scrap heap.
