Regarding the article The Severn Boar-not boring at all (Steam World 410). Four 20-year-old lads were stuck on their hire cruiser while on a week’s holiday during the last week of September 1960. We were at the end of The Berkeley Ship Canal at Sharpness. We noticed a huge number of empty petrol barges went out through the sea-lock with every high tide, so we tried to thumb a lift to Avonmouth.
The skipper of Elmsdale H said, “Jump aboard”, so we were off sailing down the Severn Estuary, towards the sea. Soon, while on the move, our barge tied up to three other empty petrol barges in mid-Estuary…
