In my youth, railwaymen, like seafarers had a certain weather-beaten look. They were seldom young and when seen at work, they were usually busy. Take a good look at the railwayman in this picture, another of those ‘human interest’ photographs by American visitor, Emery J. Gulash.
Caught on camera here, looking smart and well-equipped in his waterproofs, this man is a shunter. We have the date as May 1966 but, sadly, we don’t know who this man was or even where he was working. He is, of course, a shunter carrying his shunter’s pole. I inherited one of those when I bought Barnwell station.
