Ask me what type of station I like best, and you might be surprised at my reply. London termini? I’d have to put Waterloo first, though it would require some soul-searching to push Paddington to second on the list. What about smaller stations, out of the city? You might expect branch termini to top my list of favourites, given my devotion to places like Tetbury, Staines West and Calne, but it’s the junction stations that were equally attractive.
In fact, whoever first said, “It’s the journey, not the arrival, that is the most enjoyable” was probably right. Branch lines all had a place where they diverged from a main line – usually at or close to, a station.
While I don’t recall any particular affection for West Drayton & Yiewsley…
