After finishing school, he worked as a security guard for a mining company and saw how badly the African workers were treated. He joined the African National Congress (ANC), who were fighting for the rights of Africans, and studied to become a lawyer.
In 1948, the government of South Africa introduced ‘apartheid’ laws that discriminated against non-white people.
Nelson organised protests and strikes against apartheid, so he was arrested and imprisoned for 27 years. The courage and resilience he showed in prison inspired others to fight for freedom, and he was released in 1990.
In 1994, he became the president of South Africa, and brought equality and freedom to the country. For his leadership, he ‘ would Khulu’, be or given ‘the Great the name One’23 .…
