Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel loved going out at night, and even started singing in nightclubs. One of the only songs she knew was called ‘Who has seen Coco?’ – so her fans started calling her ‘Coco’!
But making clothes was her true passion. Her stylish and original hats became very popular, and she opened her own shop in Deauville in 1913. Her outfits were easy to wear, not like the heavy clothing that had been in fashion before! She opened a shop in Paris, too.
Even though she kept her early life a secret, her clothes were partly inspired by the nuns.
In 1921, she came up with her own perfume, which is still very popular. She called it ‘Chanel No. 5’, after her lucky number.
