When Charles was nine years old, his father took him to work with him as a special treat! His dad's name was John, and he worked in an office at the Chatham Naval Yards. This was where ships of the Royal Navy were built and repaired.
Charles stared in wonder at the blacksmiths, ropemakers, oarmakers and mastmakers doing their work. The sounds of sawing and hammering filled the air, and it smelled of tar and wood shavings.
