Loch Ness is a deep lake in the Scottish Highlands. Many people claim that its murky waters are home to a serpent-like creature called the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings of ‘Nessie’ have been reported since the 6th century CE, but its existence has never been proven. Lake Titicaca is in the Andes mountains on the border of Bolivia and Peru. Inca legends say that the first Inca rulers were sent by the sun god Inti and emerged from the lake. It may be the birthplace of the Inca civilization, and Inca ruins have been found in the lake! Maria Montessori went to medical school and studied children’s physical and mental health. She became a co-director of a school for children with learning difficulties and came up with new ideas for teaching them. In 1907, she opened a school where her new techniques were used to instruct children without disabilities. Called the Casa dei Bambini or Children’s House, it had between 50 and 60 young pupils. Students learned personal care, helped clean their classroom and tended the garden. Instead of giving the children formal lessons, Maria encouraged them to follow their own interests and learn naturally.
