Before that, Italy wasn’t a single nation. Instead, there were lots of little states with their own rulers, governments and even languages. Now, all the people living there became ‘Italians’… and they had to decide what they wanted the nation to be like. It was a time of great change!
When Maria was small, her family lived in a little farming town called Chiaravalle. From their home, they looked out over vineyards, groves of olive trees and the blue Mediterranean Sea. The girl played in the sunshine and hunted for seashells on the beach.
