IN THE mid-1980s, a group of Brisbane-based mates turned Australia’s street machining scene on its ear. The names Wayne Pagel, Rob Beauchamp and Greg Carlson will trigger memories for many old-schoolers, and their respective builds have long been entrenched as icons in our history books. Wayne’s famed black HT Monaro, which we featured way back in the June 1986 issue, was officially dubbed Midnight Maniac, but has since become universally known and remembered by what was on its number plates: GAS69. With a second generation of Pagel HTs featured in this issue – son Reece’s sedan on page 58 – we spoke to Wayne about those formative years of the pro street scene and how the modified car movement has evolved in the past three decades. HUGE CUBES, 14/71 BLOWER, AND A COUPLE OF THOUSAND HORSEPOWER; WE WANTED TO BUILD SOMETHING NOTICEABLE! IN BUSINESS, it’s a good idea to get out there and show people what you do. And that, folks, is the fundamental reason this mountain-motored Torana exists. It’s a blown, big-blocked business card for chassis, suspension and brake hardware specialists Castlemaine Rod Shop, north-west of Melbourne. PETER Grmusa’s ATRISK XR Falcon is hands-down one of the most insane burnout cars in the scene. The specs are out of this world: 700ci big-block Chev, giant blower and 2000hp. It has enough grunt to take a tyre from brand new to a pile of dust in a matter of seconds; you’ve never seen a car so violent out on the burnout pad. ATRISK’s first incarnation won the Summernats Burnout Championship in 2006 and 2007 and was on the cover of the February 2008 issue of Street Machine. In 2013 Peter gave the car a break from competition so he could revamp it into its current form; in its place came the EVILXA Falcon ute, which won the Summernats 26 Burnout Masters. SHANE JONES 1971 LC GTR TORANA AT 19 years of age, Shane Jones turned his focus away from the surfing circuit and towards a well-worn Cyan 1971 LC GTR Torana that had sat in his parents’ driveway for far too long. After an extensive resto, he ended up with this sweet Sebring Orange road rocket, complete with the extra power of a fully legal V8. The bodywork was a collaboration between Bel Air Custom Paint & Panel and Ferrace Auto Body, and Bel Air also took care of the paint. Fifteen years after work was completed, the Torana still looks factory fresh. IT IS ALWAYS exciting when a survivor from the 1980s golden age of street machining pops up in good nick, so we were pumped to see Owen Webb’s XW Falcon ute, Bruiser, for sale online. Owen is the chief judge for both Street Machine Summernats and Meguiar’s MotorEx, but he got his start with the XW in the late 1970s. WARREN Borg’s Chrysler 300 has been a flagship for the Mopar fraternity for some time now, with a gutsy blown Hemi under the hood. The 5.7-litre utilises a Manley rotating assembly with 9.8:1 forged pistons and customised factory heads with bigger valves. Factory headers have been ditched for a set of ceramic-coated TTI units from Modern Muscle, and the combination is swinging an F1A ProCharger with an eight-rib drive belt system. Warren has the blower cranked right up and is jamming 18psi of boost through the small-block, and on methanol the motor is pumping out over 800hp. Fuel supply is via a Fore fuel hat, with three in-tank Walbro pumps feeding eight 1500cc injectors. The motor is tuned from the USA using DiabloSport software, and the gearbox is a beefed-up…

Sure, they ran the ageing 6.75-litre V8 and a basic GM auto, but introduced refinements such as active suspension, along with – <scratching record sound> What’s that? This ISN’T a Rolls-Royce?
