STEVE Bezzina’s XW Falcon has long been the quickest leaf-sprung street Falcon in the country, and has seen two different turbo small-block V8 combinations over the years. Since around 2012, it has gone from running eights to now being on the verge of its first six-second quarter-mile pass. The most recent engine combination was a 427ci small-block Ford with twin Precision turbos built by Frank Marchese from Dandy Engines, who runs a similar set-up in Dandy’s XW Falcon. That same motor combo saw Bezzina’s car run a best of 7.08@203mph on 275 radials, untubbed and with a fairly basic leaf-spring rear end set-up by Profab Motorsport Fabrications. WHEN Pat Fay passed away in late 2013, he left a void in the Aussie custom car scene. For generations of car nuts, the reassuring sight of Pat’s caravan at Street Machine Summernats – plying his spare parts wares – was a constant. Pat Fay Spares was an innovative business that helped pave the way for the industry that was to come, but Pat remains most famous for his Humpy Mekka FJ Holden van. THE Mad Scientist of Australian Hot Rodding: Rod Hadfield was launched in June at Hadfield Hot Rods in Chewton, Victoria, with a large crowd in attendance. The car park was chock-full of hot rods and street machines, and inside the museum it was standing room only, with many punters forced to stand outside. Eddie Ford – himself a legend of the Castlemaine hot rodding milieu – kicked off proceedings with some great anecdotes from Rod’s early days. Rod returned fire and spoke of how honoured and humbled he was by the turnout. XY FALCON #1 was black, tough and made the Summernats Top 60. A few months after its ’Nats success, its owner and builder Jason Grima was out for a drive with a few other cars and broke an axle. The car was written-off. “We were just driving along and it did a somersault,” Jason remembers. “It was a hard rollover; the roof was bent, the tops of the doors were bent, the quarter destroyed – it was a total mess. Luckily no one was hurt.” XY Falcon #2 – aka TUFFGT – is a blue, a Summernats Top Sedan and two-time Top 20 car. IN THIS second instalment of 1960s Queensland Police investigation photos collated by Neville Parsons, his passion for a diverse range of automobiles is evident with the makes and models chosen for his album. CHARLIE Saliba is a hot-rodder at heart, and in hot-rod building there are no hard and fast rules. Parts from any make or model can be interchanged freely to create one’s own personal Frankenstein’s monster. But what Charlie has done with his immaculately presented 1971 Valiant Charger R/T is the complete opposite. “Hot-rodding is a lot easier, because if you don’t have a certain part you can buy something else, improvise, or make something,” says the Swansea, NSW-based spray painter. “Finding the exact parts for a classic restoration like this is so much harder. TASSIE HOLDEN HK PREMIER “I PURCHASED my HK Premier in 2010 as an unfinished project. It was knackered, with plenty of rust and in need of a full rebuild. It had a Holden 308 in it but now runs a worked 307 Chev. It’s running a cam package with an RPM Air-Gap manifold, Holley 750 and Jet-Hot-coated extractors. Trans is a T350 with a shift kit and 3200rpm stall, running back to a nine-inch with 3.5:1 gears and 31-spline axles. The body has been mini-tubbed to the rails to fit the 15x10 rims – Max Dumesny beadlocks with Weld AlumaStar centres. The fronts are 15x4 Billet Specialties Comp 5s.
