STREET Machine has built plenty of project cars over the years, including HQFORU, the Scorcher Falcon, the Comfort Cruiser Ford Galaxie and many more. There are many common threads amongst them that we can all relate to, including struggling with budgets, deadlines, dodgy parts and unforeseen issues. But one of the biggest dramas has always been space. We’ve never had a workshop to call our own, so we’ve had to beg, borrow, share or rent short-term spots to get the job done. Which is not the end of the world, but how much easier is it to work on cars when you have all your tools and spares laid out, ready to roll when you need them? Heaps! THE colour of Dom’s Torana is something he had in mind very early on in the process, forming a key part of his dream build. “My mate Angelo used to have a customer come into his shop in the 90s with a VR ClubSport in this Genesis Blue, and back then a VR HSV Clubby was the hamburger with the lot,” he says. Dom was sold on the colour, so his LX was swathed in Genesis Blue acrylic paint. “I never wanted it to be a perfect show car; that’s why it’s still acrylic,” he says. I’VE BEEN WORKING ON A FEW IDEAS TO GET SOME MORE SPEED OUT OF ‘OLD FAITHFUL’ AFTER a break of more than three months, we’re about to go racing again, this time at Sydney Dragway for Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder on 3-4 May. The meeting is the penultimate round for all the 400 Thunder Pro classes, and there’s a lot on the line for the ’Slammer teams. IT MIGHT seem like we’re stating the obvious,but Street Machine isamagazine about modified cars. If you don’t like LS engines in Monaros, or Barras in Camaros, you might be reading the wrong mag. We don’t do restorations here, with matching-numbers cigarette lighters and hubcaps. I wish everyone could appreciate performance cars in the same way I do. I love all makes and types of vehicles – Holdens, Chevs, Fords, Chryslers and even VWs. And I like all sorts of engines: V8, six or four-cylinder; naturally aspirated, blown, turbo, nitrous or nitro. SIX GUN JOHN Ricca’s VL Commodore is the quickest six-cylinder car we’ve had in the history of Drag Challenge, running a best of 7.91@171mph at last year’s event and coming second in the Turbosmart Outlaw Blown class. John now plans to go even quicker at this year’s Drag Challenge. The BT1 Commodore has been at NextGen Race Cars having more barwork added to the rollcage and the rear end changed to a 40-spline full-floater with even bigger 15x14-inch rear wheels. While adding more in, John has also pulled about 200lb out of the car. Part of that comes from switching from the factory block to a billet alloy RB30, which can also handle more power. MOTOR car modifications. It doesn’t matter what it is, unless the whole deal is really thought through in terms of how the mod will affect everything else, you might suddenly have a disaster. Happened to a bloke with a tasty Mark 2 compact manual Jaguar that was really well looked after and not many kays. But he had never been happy with the heavyweight steering, so he finally decided to install a power steering rack-and-pinion. There’s not much room around Mark 2 Jag twin-cam engines, particularly down the left front where the Lucas contact-point distributor lives. But the bloke found a steering set-up that would fit in that cramped engine bay, along with a compatible belt-driven hydraulic pump, so he got out the tools and an angle grinder. Took heaps…
