Oh, I remember the ads: “To be this good takes AGES!” Rarely have marketing slogans been so apt, because it took forever for Sega’s 8-bit console to find its feet. On paper, things looked great: the Japan-only SG-1000 Mark III was a would-be Nintendo Famicom smasher. But Ninty locked down devs into exclusivity contracts; a US relaunch in 1986 gave the console its familiar name, and a swankier shell, only for Nintendo to lock the doors again. So Sega turned to Europe… and nearly face-planted even harder. How? Did it somehow ruin Christmas? Pretty much. With the NES struggling in a region awash with 8-bit micros and cheap tape-based games, Sega made an ‘arcade at home’ pitch. Who needs a ‘professional’ phone anyway? The Pixel 10 is out to prove you don’t have to go Pro to get a mobile to be proud of. And on paper at least, it does appear that Google has nailed the essentials, with enough extras to make the standard model of its latest phone feel special – including a design that’s every bit as swanky as the Pro models (see p34), with satin-finish edges, a glossy glass back and slimmer bezels. With E3 officially dead and buried, Cologne has become the new mecca for gamers – and you don’t need a press pass to get in. Gamescom is the world’s largest video-game event open to the public, and this was an especially big year. Nintendo marked its return to the show after a few years away, letting visitors get their hands on lots of upcoming games for the Switch 2 – not to mention the console itself. This was one of two places you could trial the eagerly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong – the other being the Xbox booth, where it was running on Asus’s new ROG Xbox Ally (more on that in this month’s cover feature, from p39). You’re getting the same internals, same controllers and same colour passthrough cameras as the full Quest 3, just with last-gen optics. The built-in speakers envelop you in positional audio, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 brings much faster load times than the Quest 2, and the graphics have taken a dramatic step up. Rivals can’t compete with Meta’s range of games, and the level of immersion is up there with the best PC-based VR.
